Short .22LR's

Hey everyone,
I have a pet project I want to work on in the near-mid future and it calls for a .22LR (or similar rimfire) with a short barrel length. I've read the exception clause to the minimum barrel length/minimum OAL in the regs that says it can be shorter as long as the rifle is fitted with a non-modified (ie. OEM) barrel, and I was wondering what are the shortest non-restricted rimfires you know of?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Dlask has an 8" barrel and makes a NR 26" 10/22.
Iirc there is a pistol barrel that is 4.5" from TI and Tacsol you could use. However then youd have to get a colapsable stock and pin it to the right length.
I had the dlask barrel and axiom stock. Iirc the length colapsed was 21-21" so needed pinning.
Damn it was loud though!!!!!

Dlask has a few short barrels. Not sure but there is regulation on 22's where the overall length has to be 26" (don't quote me on the length), the barrel can be 2" 4" or whatever you want as long as the overall length is there. Rick at ATRS can also make you a barrel you need. do you research first just to ensure the overall length is where it needs to be. The aver all length of 26" keeps it non-restricted I do believe

The OAL must be over 26" and the barrel length must be over 4 1/8"... I have built many SBR's ranging from 26"-30"... they are alot of fun... go for it. Dlask is your friend for this build.

I have a Henry .22 Mares leg. It will save you some time as it is already shortened quite a bit. If you would like to build one from scratch I would suggest something else.

22 mare's leg
Savage rascal
T/C hotshot
Cz scout.

Those are my short 22's.

What action type were you thinking?

My ideal would be a semi-auto with a left-hand action. A pump action would work as well, but I'm not sure if a lever would, and bolt would be absolute hell.

Thanks for the info. My aim for this project is to go with an ultra-short .22 where the gun portion is as small and light as possible, but mounted to another part that is long enough that the assembly would still be legal. Since the two parts would not be separable (or at least not easily so) my hope is that would still make my design legal. I'll do some more checking before starting the build, for sure. Build is likely a year or two in the future (if ever). Don't worry, anyone: I'm not trying to build a concealed weapon or a gun-desk or anything, haha.

Cheapest would probably be a Norinco JW15A backpacker. I picked one up at Crappy Tire in Cold Lake back in October for... Ohhh, $150, $175??? Something like that. 13" BBL, I think. Seems to shoot Ok for accuracy, nothing special. I bought it to tinker with and for sh!ts and giggles.

They're around at different dealers from time to time, seem to come and go for availability.

Also have a Mare's Leg. Nice little plinker. Be a shame to take one apart just to get the barrel, especially at the price of them.

Don't think the OP is looking for a bolt-gun but I enjoy mine also. Really like the CZ/Bruno action clone. Short sight radius of the OEM irons isn't great but mine wears a Simmons 4x 22 mag scope. Nice little plinker and can use CZ mags.
I'm always amazed to read CanTires sells firearms and ammo…..none here in the (416) GTA.

"The gun portion" includes the stock by legal definition... if you use a stock that is 26"+ the barrelled action can be any length you want as long as the barrel length is 4 1/8"+...most fixed stocks exceed 26"... which frees you upto go with whatever barrel you want.... there are serious safety concerns when the barrel is shorter than the forend of the stock as a finger might inadvertently end up in front of the muzzle. Below is a picture of an SBR that I made for my daughter with an 8" Dlask barrel... it was legal at 26 1/2", but the compensator ports were scorching the forend and I could not cut the stock down enough and still remain legal, so I swapped the barrel with a 12" Dlask.

I guess a few more details would help a bit. Feel free to tell me if you think the idea is bonkers, but what I want to do is take a fairly cheap centerfire rifle (likely either a .30-06 or 30-30 Win) and chop off a portion of the fore stock. Then, take a short-barrel .22LR, chop off the buttstock, and mount it masterkey-style to the centerfile. The reasoning behind this is that when you're hunting in the forest, you infrequently see the big game you are up there for but frequently see smaller game like grouse and rabbits that provide a little bushmeat while you're out, and can provide a welcome break from sit-and-call or scouting the trails. Thick brush and carrying a pack through the trails make two-gunning it impractical, and I'm not particularly inclined towards loading up some squibs or using a low-velocity powder like Trailboss. The combination guns I've seen (usually the over-under break-actions we've all come across) sacrifice too much in the way of functionality for what I'm thinking of. I want the .22 to have a short barrel so it doesn't protrude beyond the centerfire very much (ideally, at all). So in summary I'd have a fully functioning centerfire with a normal action and 5-round max, and maintain the original action of a rimfire so I'd have a 5- or 10-round max for that as well. And hopefully having the chopped-down rimfire mounted onto the centerfire classify it as a single gun that is long enough to be legal. So there's my vision: thoughts?

I don't have a frickin' clue what you are talking about... some kind of unlikely Frankenstein gun that would cost a fortune to engineer... buy an over/under rifle/shotgun and save your self some heartache.

I'm an engineer, so I can money on that part of it at least haha. This should be a pretty cheap project overall, since I'm not modifying the barrel or action of either firearm (hence my interest in short-barreled commercially available .22's). Hopefully this will clarify what I'm talking about a bit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KAC_Masterkey

Why not just buy an over under 30-06 under 22lr?? Would save a heck of a lot of trouble and you would at least have a nice looking gun not some backwoods get up.
