Hey guys,

Need your expert advice.

I want a lightweight (7-8 lbs scoped, so rifle under 7 lbs), short (18-20" threaded barrel) bolt action rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor.
I want a rifle that is a pleasure to carry around and maneuver, that I can also hunt with and plink out to 4-600 yards. I also want to do this for as cheap as possible (don't we always :p ).

I figured that the easiest/cheapest way to do this is buy a factory rifle as similar as possible and modify it if necessary.

So what would you guys do to make it happen? Do u like the rifle idea?

Thanks for your discussion

You could get one of Jerry's Carbon six savage pre fit barrels. They're a reasonably priced quality barrel and can be installed on any savage rifle at home. Also available in any contour you want.

A savage pre fit pencil barrel in a conventional format would be cheaper if that was the priority.

IMO I think you're better off with a 20" 308Win than a short 6.5CM at those ranges. You will have several options for a factory rifle already configured to your desires without the added cost of cutting down a 6.5CM. The velocity loss by cutting the Creed down that short takes away its advantages over the 308. Plus 308 components can be found everywhere on the cheap. Good luck to you.

Again.... You can buy exactly the rifle the OP is asking about. Savage Lightweight hunter. No cutting, no rebarreling, just buy and shoot.

I do plan on throwing a muzzle brake on it, so I'd still need to thread the savage. Is that barrel to thin for a Heathen?

If I have to thread that barrel anyway, is there any point to go with a different brand factory rifle like a Ruger predator, vanguard compact, browning micro stalker or Tika lite?

For this 308 makes more sense to me, and is what I ended up choosing in the same scenario. 308 is cheaper off the shelf or for components and if it kicks more thank you want, put on a muzzle brake. Within the distance you're suggesting, there isn't enough difference between the two, to go 6.5 CM.

I just bought a Savage 10 TR, so I’ll be using that action.

I’m going to try a Cadex/CTR.

Very nice. Should be a great rifle. I'm definitely looking to do a much more budget build :p yours will be a beautiful rifle.

I'm looking to only have to get some barrel work done. Like cut, thread, crown stuff. But not sure which factory rifle to go with. I'll be keeping the factory stock for a while, so not sure who has the best one of those. Getting an action to have a "Lego" capable (savage) rifle would be cool or a neato 10rd mag attachment. But do those other brands i listed have any merit (Weatherby, browning, Ruger, Tika)? Or Best to stick with the savage?

Btw xdmer, I'll crunch some more numbers and look into the 308 again. But I just can't help get hard over the 6.5s. Ever since I learned about the swede's iv always wanted one.

I chose the savage because of the easy barrel change.
The rifle I just bought has a 24 inch barrel(.308).
I’m cutting that down to 18 1/2.
I’ll the be able to use the .308 and the 6.5 on the same action, with just a quick barrel change.
Though ,i doubt the .308 will ever go back on.

The 6.5 does have a little better performance at 500 yrds, about 200 + FPS and a bit more energy.
Also I find the components about the same, well except for the brass.
.308 is basically free, 6.5 , not even close to free:)
