Hi there, I am looking to convert my 300 prc to a 6.5-284, has anyone had any issues switching to short action calibers to long actions? I've seen something about firing pin problems, but cannot find it anymore.

Cheers!

Plenty of Mausers have been re-barreled for 308, 243, etc. Tikka only makes a long action. The list goes on and on. The longer action may actually be a benefit in that you can load heavy bullets way out without having to worry about them fitting in the mag.

I have heard of mag / feeding issues due to the larger diameter and steeper shoulder of some short action rounds though - something to consider.

What type of rifle is it? You will need a new bolt or bolt head. Other than that it'll work fine.

Was a big time thing by Israel to convert Mauser 98 from the original 8x57 to new-fangled 7.62 NATO (308 Win) - has been several here - they put a block in the magazine - otherwise, I think the feed lips under the action rails were not touched - but I could be wrong about that. Is two Mauser 98 here that started as something else - now chambered to .243 Win - I am missing something subtle - damn things will not feed from the magazine, yet 308 Win rounds will. Is also a US Model of 1917 here - so originally in 30-06 - That action is plenty long for another done up in 300 Weatherby - I screwed on a Schultz and Larsen pre-chambered PALMA barrel - blocked that mag box like the Isreali's did for their conversions, and that very long Enfield action seems to feed the 7.62 NATO just fine.

It's a Savage 110 in the elite precision model. I will be getting a new bolt head for sure. No firing pin issues that you're aware of?

I think all savage rifles made since 2001 have .095" diameter firing pins.

If you're not having firing pin issues now, you shouldn't have any with the new bolt head and barrel.
