Well here's my little story;

I am currently in the process of exploring a piece of land that I recently bought (and clearing a little space for a future house/cottage/whatever).

I'm no hampster (6' 300#) but I don't feel quite safe walking in the woods with nothing but a hunting knife so I started carrying my 870 Tactical with a couple buckshot rounds in my pocket.

Problem is, it's a little long and heavy to carry around in thick wood and it takes considerable time and focus to actually load on the go from loose rounds in a pocket.

Basically I was thinking I'd be much better off with something simple like a side by side, a coach gun of some sort.

So here is my question;

What is available as a non restricted shotgun, break action, that would be as light and short as possible? DA Outlaw? Norinco JW2000? How light are they?

Thanks for the help.

Have you ever thought about getting a dog? I always like to carry my CZ 858 with me out on the back roads for if I feel like popping a few rounds, but I feel more comfortable with a dog then a gun. I was once picking mushrooms, and my dog started growling and barking, I turned around, and a cougar, about 100 meters away, was creeping up on me in a clear cut. If I didn't have a dog, I would have never noticed.

Definetly a dog is in the plans once I move from my city dwelling. Theres just no space in my apartment and keeping it inside all the time is wrong, I won't do that to a dog.

Cheap feeling like it's going to break in your hands or esthetics? Esthetics I dont mind, it is going to get trashed around a lot. Maybe better off with an DA Outlaw?

There are lots of used sxs for a reasonable price. I would try a 28 barrel and see how you like it. It may not be as light on paper as a shorter gun, but weight in hand is very manageable and pretty handy.

Ok thanks big buck1. I'll try and handle one before passing judgement. Any other makes or is Dominion Arms and Norinco my only options for short/light shotguns ?

A pump is simpler to operate than some SxS with hammers and/or double triggers, plus you get 5 rounds of slugs versus only 2.

If you want something lighter you could consider a 20ga pump instead of a 12ga. The smaller frame is lighter.

Also, the older Ithaca model 37 pumps were pretty light shotguns, and lighter than the 870. Look for one of those in a 20ga or even a 12ga, and have the barrel shortened to about 22 inches.

i have bought a sxs off tradeex that im going to cut down for a truck gun and for basicly this exact purpose. try it in full lenght first though you might like it.

Just read all the bear defence threads.....same info would apply get a 12" grizz with some buckshot or slugs toss a houge stock on it.
If your carrying a pump gun the shells dont do much good in the pocket,if your carrying it for protection then keep it loaded if your local laws permit it.

Not sure if it is legal or not. I guess I could get my small game hunting license and say I'm hunting. That's why I liked the idea of a break action. Seems it would be easier to load from loose rounds. Might get a hamerless coach gun and cut it shorter. As long as I keep it 26" AOL that's legal right?

Check on your firearm regs. We can walk around with the plugs out in BC as long as you are not hunting. Provincial differences do exist.
