Short AR-15 Question

Here is a question for the experts:
We all see pictures of special forces people with 11.5 and shorter AR-15s. From what I understand short barrels lack range and leathality.
What is the realistic effective range of such short ARs (11.5 10.5 etc). Do these operators use special ammo in such short barrels ?

Depending on barrel twist, short barrel require heavier bullet (such as the new 77 grain)

Don't try to find any yet. Everything is Mil production at this time. There is plenty of threads on the matters

i can knock a 6 " round 1/2 " steel plate clear off the table at 100m with my 11.5" ar15 all day long, only take about 4 shots and the plate is so dented that it cant be shot at.
Nothing wrong with an 11.5 " up to 300m

Okay what about fragmentation from a short barrel AR-15? for the 5.56 to fragment properly does it not need very high velocities a.k.a from the Long barrel?
 
Bullets dont tumble.

Boattail bullets will yaw in tissue - at certain impact speeds the force excerted on the projectile will be enough to make it fragment.
Depending upon the thickeness and strenght of the bullet jacket, the length of the projectile, and the density of the impacting tissue will depend upon what it does.

77gr is not new -- its been around for a while -- the BlackHills Mk262 Mod1 arrised out the either USN rifle team loading of the HSM 77gr SMK load (and the nice orange boxes).
 
NavyShooter and I tested a few 11.5" AR-'s out to 300yds a few years ago, we were both able to hit the "Hun's Head" consistantly (20 out of 20) which a Bushnell Holosight from the prone position. We were using SS109's (62gr).

I recently chrongraghed my reloads out of my 11.5" and I was able to produce 3100fps from the short barrel (testing). I do not usually make them that hot for a 11.5" barrel.

The 62gr projecticle requires at least 2500fps to be effective (6-8" of tissue penetration). I find the Winchester CQ3131 (62gr) to be very accurate, and tmy 11.5" 1/9 HBar to be very accurate out to 400yards.
 
WHile I am not as good as Navyshooter and Pope, hitting a fig12 at 300m with a 10.5 is not a challenge with either 55gr or 62gr.

By any chance you will have data of depth of issue penetration vs velocity that you can post here?

The first documented US military use of the 5.56mm 77gr bullet was in Vietnam by NSW units(Seals) in the Stoner 63 weapon platform.
 
Well the RVN era 70gr stuff was predominately IVI Match ammo a long FMJ-BT bullet - not regular even in the SEAL armouries.
AA53 - the 77gr SMK loading was type classified by USNSWC Crane as the Mk262 Mod 0 and now Mod1.

Milarm is the Cdn BlackHills distributor - but I dont think they actually bring anything in (in serious quantities) - I've asked for 77gr loads before - and got a box here and there -- but I try to buy ammo in 1k lots at least (bulk burchase saves $)
