Hello, does anybody use a coach gun or something similar for geese or upland birds? I have the opportunity to buy one and they look great. Would it be practical at all or just fun to have around?

The one I'm looking at is a 12 gauge 3" with imp. cyl & modifies choke 20" barrels.

thanks

Had one yrs ago. Worked just fine, but was heavy with a capital H. After a couple yrs the "neat" factor ran it's course and I went back to my wingmaster, traded the coach. That being said every once in awhile I see one for sale and catch myself thinking....hmmmm nice gun. :)

I shot an 870 for quite sometime that was cut to 21 inches or so. No choke just straight cylinder and I killed a lot of geese with that gun. If you're going to be shooting from blinds where you're standing side by side you will piss your buddies off. Those short barrels are pretty loud. If you're in lay downs and off on either end shooting away from your buddies it shouldn't be too bad.

Partridge..yes, Goose..NO!!! You need a larger payload and higher speed with Steel shot on geese, and the short gun will recoil alot, make more noise, have lower velocity, and much reduced hitability(is that a word?).

If hunting over decoys (shot's are typically <35 yards) 3" shells run through ic/mod chokes will be just fine. If pass shooting (stretching shots >45 yards) you would be better served with tighter chokes.

Can you play an entire round of golf with nothing but a sand wedge? Yup. If you want to do the equivalent with your coach gun for goose hunting go for it! But it is the wrong tool for the job!
