This is a really good article on the minimum effective bbl length for .308 rifles. Dunno if this has been posted here before but all of my .308s have short barrels so I was happy to find it.

Enjoy :)

When I cut down the barrel on my Rem 700 Varmint from 26" to 20" I did some research and found that you lose approx. 25 FPS for every inch you cut off..........You can tweak your loads to get the velocity back up.......

I know that...

TacOps used the very same factory ammo for all tests...

I opted for a 20" barrel for my Tikka T3 Tac, just because it's substantially more "handy" and quick to point compared to the 24" (I know it's not much extra length but the feel is quite different). Since I reload anyhow, I can definitely get higher velocities, and the shorter barrel is stiffer.

I had always read that the magic number was about 50 feet per second of velocity loss per inch, but I'm not sure what that would apply to, maybe for cutting under 20"? Only 25 feet per second per inch, is definitely a reasonable loss for the length you take off.

And now that mine has the iron sights installed, much nicer for a brush gun too :D (of course that's completely irrelevant to the topic)
