short barreled semi barreled action... any suggestions?

I'm looking to put together a short barreled light weight rimfire, it's purpose is small game with CB's while big game hunting, so something lightweight, not bulky (compact) and semi auto for grouse and rabbit etc while out looking for deer and moose etc.

Any suggestions? I'd love something like a 10/22 with a 14" barrel, or maybe a 64 series action, but getting a gunsmith to rebuild a shorter barrel negates the cost benefits of a cheap action.

I'll build the stock myself with CF over styrofoam.

I'm tired of missing out on some birds while looking for game, and I want something that can be small and light on my shoulder, or maybe a strap system that keeps it from flailing around while running after bigger game.

CB=CB long? I'd be concerned about low-velocity ammo like this cycling a semi action, but it might work? GB-that would certainly be a light gun. Some of the very short, 10/22 platform barrels are even shorter, but beefy. (if memory serves, DLASK?)

One option might be a CZ 457 Scout, used as-is? Very compact rifles, accurate, will likely gobble-up the CB longs even though mags are designed for LR.

Worth mentioning maybe, I haven't found the lower velocity 22 ammo options to be consistent in terms of accuracy. CB longs, CCI Quiet-22, etc.

I don't think any semi auto rim fire would cycle reliably with the CB cartridge. I think the suggested CZ 457 Scout would work well.

I have put together a 10/22 that cycles the CCI semi auto quiet rounds well(835fps). 16.5" carbon barrel, as the shorter ones a very hard to find, with carbon stock. Under 5 pounds with red dot. I can manually cycle the shorts thru it, I know that negates the semi auto, but at least the next round is not in the chamber until you load it.

I will have to try the segmented quiet rounds, as I think I have a box. Don't know why I didn't think of those. (710 fps)

Can technically add a folding adapter, and be very short to carry over the shoulder. Have quick sling attachments on butt and up on forearm to go that route.

While out hunting I try and carry a sling shot with marbles for the grouse, and carry the 22 on the sxs when riding to and fro.

Sure wish we could use a quiet adapter here in Canada on the 22's.

I think Volquartsen makes a 10/22 kit designed to cycle shorts? Pretty expensive though.

I like my 10/22 takedown, if you want something compact than nothing will be shorter than a takedown model. It also cycles the CCI quiet semi auto rounds just fine. Also keep in mind, if noise is a concern, the shorter the barrel; the louder the report. An 8 inch 10/22 is much louder. 12.5" is a sweet spot in my experience (both in accuracy and noise). I love shorty 10/22's but found my takedown to just be more practical for what you're describing.

I got that as a TC R22 action/ guts with an 8" dlask barrel. Added the rear half of a takedown stock. Just over legal OAL before the flash hider. Its comically small and lightweight and a lot of fun to shoot.

I always forget about the Buckmark carbine, those are a brilliant little gun.

As noted above, CCI Quiet is the way to go. Quieter than CB.

The Quiet Segmented version far outclasses everything else in this range for hunting purposes. I'm fairly confident you could tune a semi auto to cycle Quiet Segmented ammo, that would be a fun project actually (this stuff is lower powered than the Quiet SemiAuto).

However, also as noted above, there's no free lunch when it comes to noise vs. barrel length. Under 16" and you really notice the noise picking up, even with CCI Quiet. You might also find it is harder to get a semi auto to cycle the low powered ammo when the barrel gets too short (insufficient dwell time). And since they've all got the same twist rate, shorter barrels will have a harder time stabilizing slower bullets like Quiet (accuracy and keyholing issues).

You won't find a short, light, and cheap semiauto - Not in the class we're talking. If you're on a budget and you want to get your feet wet 2-Gun hunting with 22 Quiet ammo, try the Chiappa Little Badger. Or Savage Rascal if you can't stand the look of the former.
