With the new ruger gunsite rifle out. I like the idea but am wondering what options are there for making something similar on a budget. I would like something like the original Can-am thread for a bush rifle (http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=433070)

I am not too worried about iron sights, mostly I would like a short barreled, light, rifle in 308.

I understand that I cannot cut a barrel shorter than 18.5". Are there other options for barrels shorter than 18.5? Can you get a custom barrel done at say 14-16"?

I am kinda looking at a savage 111 rifle as the are fairly cheap and a decent starting point, I believe the stevens are no longer around or that would be a better option.

Or perhaps I am just better off saving up for the gunsite.

Hmmmm. Never seen that one before. Another good choice. But at the price you could get the gunsite, and as far as the Canadian version goes have a stainless barrel, detach mag and iron sights.

The Stevens 200's are still around.

Personally I would pick up one of the Savage package deals (no accutrigger, detachable mag, regular stock). Shorten the barrel to 18", reinforce the forend, and bed the action.

You can buy barrels with a length less than 18". It just doesn't seem worth buying a barrel for a hunting rifle to save 2" in length unless you want a caliber not normally found in a Savage and would be buying a new barrel anyways.

I was looking for some on the market...decided that the ammo was the issue with my vanguard shorty. Anyways, Remington and Savage have the 20" bull barrel "tactical. Savage has a shorty (scout).

Ruger's scout looks ok, but have not heard too much as to how it shoots, except for an article in one of the magazine I read a little while ago.

There is a few out there and the market is gaining more interest too, so the prices are increasing and they are moving off the shelves quicker.

Not too much with irons though, and that was the sticker for me.

Brought mine in to trade. Price too low for trade and the others were getting pricey, for the exact job mine could do, except newer, so the cheapskate in me is keeping it for a while longer.
