Hey I'm looking for the smallest non restricted 22lr to bring with me (in the bush) during deer season so that I can harvest grouse and rabbit when the opportunity arises. if you guys have any suggestions it would be great

Ideally some sort of semi auto with a open sights ,light barrel , plastic furniture and extendable wire frame butt stock.

if nothing exists I'll likely mod something, but I figured I'd ask first

Figure someone will mention one of these, so I might as well be the first~Norinco Bacpacker

13" barrel, non-restricted, pretty accurate with CCI sub sonic HP, compact, etc. etc. Love mine, bought it like-new for $175.

Well, to each his own. The most I've ever spent on a rifle is a Savage .223 I bought a few months ago, but my other hunter is a Savage 93FV~you won't find a bigger Savage fan on CGN! Having said that, and owning both, I don't think you're getting "more" gun for the extra $100 with the Savage, especially since they made the decision to cheapen it further by not building them with Accutriggers. My Norinco purchase was very much an informed one, but I'll never suggest someone NOT buy Canadian given the chance. The Backpacker is a hell of a gun for the money though, and mine shoots great.

Good luck with whatever you choose, make sure you post some pics!

Get a 10/22 and put a 12.5" dlask barrel on it

so how does that work? I thought that the shortest barrel length was 18.5", if I can put on a 12.5" barrel I assume that the overall rifle lenght must comply with the 26" min?

Is this correct or is there someother reg for rimfire?

Marlin 70PSS papoose!

X 100 000 000 000
I own one and i cant even begin to tell you how rediculously accurate and reliable and lightweight and practical and fun these guns are. Plus you get the added benefit of having a gun that breaksdown into a small package that stowes away in its own floating carry case for transport, synthetic stock, stainless steel barrel, excellent iron sights... Easily the only .22lr i will NEVER sell.

There is also the AR-7... i had both at one time, now i only own the marlin. The AR-7 was a novel idea, but it wasnt even half as accurate or reliable as the marlin... jam-o-matic, plastic steel lined barrel etc...

The savage shorty's are cool too, but why work a bolt when you can have a semi auto that is equally if not more accurate, and stainless, for less money?

18.5" applies specifically to semi-auto centerfire rifles and shotguns to keep them non-restricted.

Rimfire and manually operated guns just have to comply with the 26 inch OAL to stay unrestricted. (And the barrel has to come short from the factory. No sawing it down past a certain point)

You got it. You also have to comply with provincial hunting regs (bc has a minimum size around 12.5")

Dlask makes both heavy bbls and tapered bbls in the lenghts they offer

NEA has some pretty affordable bbl's. I just started building my first 10/22 with a 9" bbl, its even shorter than I imagined.

Semi's are fun but I would look for something that cycles shorts and longs as well to be really versatile. That's probably a tube magazine. I think there are a few semi's like this but most would be lever, pump or bolt.

The 18.5" applies to you, as a non registered gunsmith, cutting down a longer barrel on one of your guns. For semi autos it's 18.5, for other action types the minimum is 18.

But this rule goes out the window if you're a barrel maker and become cleared for making shorter barrels. And Dlask is one such maker.

With a 12.5 inch barrel on a FIXED stock rifle you should still be good to go with the 26 inch OAL law/rule. But you can't put the short barrel and a folding stock on the same gun since the folded length would then likely be less than 26 inches. Or you could set up a compact model with a folding stock and you should still be able to comply with the 26 inch rule. Short barrel or folding stock. Your option.
