short range variable power optic

Aloha folks, just looking for some advice this saturday afternoon.

I got a short barrelled .22 I'm hoping to hunt with soon, but need some advice for optics. I'm looking for a 1-4x scope, for cheap. Any suggestions as to brands etc.? It'd be for headshots on squirrels and grouse.

DMS is pretty big and Heavy for a compact .22 hunting scope plus it's not really meant for typical rim fire hunting ranges.
What's your budget?

I'd like to keep it under $300 ideally, I was originally just going to get a fixed 4x but the idea of a 1-4 is enticing.
