Short shotgun question...

Hello all, i was reading around in the forum , and i am still confused about the short shotgun rules in Canada.

I am looking for a shotgun for my pack, or a shot gun in the 26 to 30" range to be transported in my backpack or in my ATV.

Can anyone suggest a brand of shotgun or what I am allowed to do to make one shorter?

Thanks to all...

A manually operated shotgun must have an overall length greater than 26" to be non-restricted. No barrel length criteria. Shorter than 26" is restricted.

A semi-auto shorter than 26" OAL or with a barrel under aprx 18.5" is restricted.

So does that mean i can buy any shotgun and get the barrel cut to whatever and cut the stock to whatever to total, lets say 28 inches? As I thought that cutting the barrel my self or not from the manufacturer was illegal?

No it must be manufactured length of less than 18", you cannot shorten the barrel beyond 18" yourself because the. It would be prohibited. Shortening a 28" to 18.5" is legal to do yourself.

It does not necessarily have to be a manufactured firearm with a barrel length of less than 18". You can either purchase an aftermarket barrel made under 18" in length or manufacture your own by using a barrel blank and then install it on the manually operated firearm.

14" 590A1 w/Raptor PG = little over 26".

Probably the best combination. Better make sure you can use a PG to shoot before you set it up like this. My 14" 590A1 is only 33" with an aftermarket stock on it.

Can also get an 870 and slap on a short barrel... also Fabarm makes short barreled models.

I was thinking of maybe a Hatsan with folding stock, 28" overall length when folded.. ANyone use one of those before?

The BARREL must be manufactured less than 18"

Ok cool, thanks EL34/6L6 , a positive review..... They are hard to find I'll tell you....

Do you know if it is possible to add a fore grip to this shotgun?

Have a good one!

No foregrip option for this model.
Yes, the top folder is one of the harder Aimgaurd models to find. The side folder one is much more prevelant. When I saw the top folder on sale for $290 I grabbed it, whether I needed it or not. It also came with a second synthetic stock.

Here's a top folder Aimgaurd if your interested:

The double barrel Mossberg MAVERICK MODEL HS-12 Thunder Ranch would be a very reasonable choice. Easy to load, no short stroking on the pump to be had. 6 1/4 Lb. reasonable weight. 18 1/2" barrel.

The Armed shotgun looks nice actually... and cheaper too, seems like it would be easier to remove from the backpack without getting caught on anything more so than the Optima....

Thanks Dexter!
I will check out that double barrel one AppleFarmer, however i am looking for a pump action, for the simple reason of quicker successive shots , when a bear is running after me or my kids... lol...

Hmmm just noticed that Armed is 43 inches, thats too long.... too bad, unless i am looking at the wrong model...

12-14" barrel shotguns are made and offered by many companies.

Dlask, Dominion Arms, Mossberg, Fabarm, Remington, Hatsan, etc.

I'm running an 8.5" Dlask 870. This gun is perfect for me and it fits in the front locker box commonly used on atv/quads. That's part of the reason I went 8.5" barrel nothing to fold to get a super short gun that can be stored and carried in a lots of places and ways.
