Shorten a Marlin 336 barrel.......

I have it in me head to have one of those short barreled lever Trapper sort.
Is this legal to do?
Could one find a short barrel and have it put on?
Cost involved to do either/eyethor?
Shortening would entail remounting the front sight.

Anyone done this sort of thing?

I'd imagine you'd shorten the mag tube as well? Make it a four shot?

No legal issue about shortening the barrel, so long as the finished rifle is at least 26" (I think that is the minimum length.)

Gunsmith would have to cut barrel, crown the barrel, re-mount front sight (unless it is scoped). Cut back the mag tube too, if it is full length.

Can't cut the barrel any more than 18.5" either
if you find a shorter barrel thats factory you could use that

Guess again - there is a big legal issue on shortening barrels.. it isn't just the overall length...

On a manually operated center fire rifle you can not cut a factory barrel less than 18 inches without it becoming prohibited.

I'm not sure what calibers they came in but if you rebarrel a shorty to the same length I can't see it being an issue.

A rebarrel would be necessary to get under 18".
Shorten the mag. tube from the breech end.

Buy the 336 youth model. It has a 16" barrel already. Then if the stock is to short, look for a regular length

I've cut down plenty of Marlin's, I usually redo the front sight with a barrel dovetail. 19" seems to be a great length for balance and muzzle noise.

I did up a couple of 336Y's not that long ago, it's a pretty short sight radius with that 16.25" barrel using the factory sights. A reciever sight or low power scope helps with that.

Like has been mentioned the 336 youth model has a 16.25" barrel.

They also marketed the Marlin Marauder way back when, basically the same, a 336 but with barrel band and tall front sight like you see on the Winchesters.

You could also have a new barrel made in whatever caliber you want but it will likely end up costing more than buying a new youth model.

As I understand the regs, a Licensed Manufacturer (like Dlask, ATR) can re-barrel it to a shorter length but not shorten the existing barrel less than 18".
