I think the normal LOP on a BLR (pistol grip) is advertised as @13 1/2"...and there is a gun I'm interested in that has been shortened by 1/2". I'm unable to try it and wondering if it would seem odd. I've never had a 'shortened' stock on a rifle and I guess they have all been the standard length of 13 1/2" or so. I'm pretty 'standard' myself at 5'9" if that makes a difference.

I have heard the theory that it would be a nice quick gun with the shortened stock, and possibly a couple of ounces lighter (?), but would it affect the balance? Enough that I could notice? I don't want to buy it and have it arrive only to find the hammer is up my nose, haha.

It's a gun I have wanted for some time, in the calibre I want, but it ain't cheap so I'm a little 'gun shy' of the shortened stock...any opinions?

Unless you're like me and your fingers extend below the knee (just kidding) the half inch won't be even noticeable. If anything it will allow for better control of lever throw and allow for smoother ejection and reloading. If it did become a problem you could always add a recoil pad to make up the difference

Recoil pad is a cheap fix. Maybe if you play your cards right, the shortened stock may work well as a bartering chip and you might be able to save a few bucks on your gun deal?

Unless you're shooting in Californeye-aye, the shortened length could be a blessing.
Most shoot target in the warm weather and most hunting happens in the fall.
Wear a t-shirt, long sleeved shirt and a light jacket, then opine on it.

Or say fruck it and shoot the Winchester yer 'bout to toss for it.....................:nest:

Fruck it............go for it.
Your kid will fit it soon nuff...........

The majority of shorter shooters are using stocks that are too long. Try it, that length should work well for you.

I'm 6 feet and can shoot most LOP from about 12 1/2 to 14" quite comfortably, it has more to do with balance and rifle weight and configuration than just LOP. Never measured a 92 or 94 Win but I doubt they would go over 12.5", I also have a little Mod 7 KS in 350 RM that is about 12 3/4" and it pops up and holds like a real darling, even all 6'4 or 5" of Boomer said it came up and fit remarkably well. Like I said it depends more on configuration and weight distribution than just butt to trigger length..............

This.

I'm a hair under 6' tall and I almost always cut a full inch of any stock I am reworking for any reason.

Stocks from European rifles seem particularly long for some reason, often well over 14" LOP with any sort of pad.

I've always found that a stock with 13 1/2" - 14" may seem okay when you're standing in your living room in a t-shirt, but add a few layers of heavy hunting clothing, and maybe a budget scope that only has 3" of usable eye relief, and you've suddenly got a but of an unwieldy monster on your hands.

13" total LOP, including a good pad, is about as long as I like, and I've got a couple of rifles with "youth" size stocks (about 12 1/2" total with pad) that I find very practical indeed, for real field use.

Good post. I thought I was the odd one that likes shorter stocks. Most stocks seem at least a 1/2" too long for me. Once it starts to cool off and you put on hunting clothes, the LOP is way too big.
