I am getting a 22" bolt action in 223. I read about tests where people shortened barrels and they didn't see much drop in velocity, and in many cases there was an increase in accuracy.
Now there are many accurate short barreled 223 rifles. The Mossberg MVP Patrol is 16.5" and has excellent below moa accuracy. There's no reason to have a 22" barrel. if I shorten it to 17", I will have the same accuracy, but my rifle will be lighter, easier to handle and easier to store. there is no practical loss.
however, I probably will have a more difficult time selling it? don't know for sure.
what is your opinion?
