Shortening blr barrel

.
Muzzle blast, loss of velocity, considerable loss of resale value. You did not mention the calibre.

Suggest you fire a Swedish M-94 Carbine for a few shots, then make up your mind.

That said, for many years my go-to hunting rifle for everything from Deer to Elk and Moose was a very handy, light Ruger International Carbine in .308 Winchester. It did the job, usually in one shot, on anything that I could get a good hold on.

For an inch and a half I would remove the rust and touch up the bluing first and see how that turns out before cutting the barrel. Ultimately it is your decision, good luck with whatever you decide.

had a guy years ago bring in a as new BAR and said it was to front heavy, took a dull hack saw and cut off 3-4 inch, wanted me to put the sight on (for 5.oo) I told him the crown has to be done as he cut on a angle with the saw, he said no, it will be fine, so I suggested he go home and do the sight himself, never saw the silly old fool again, he may have got the welder out?.
What I am saying , just clean it up, polish a bit, degrease and usually turns out quite good, warm it up a bit helps also, not HOT.
