Shortening Grip to Trigger Length

Hi, just wondering if anyone has some insight on shortening a wood stock for a Mossberg 500?

Would it be possible to cut the side of the stock that attaches to the receiver? I would like to shorten the length from the grip to the trigger, leaving the recoil pad side alone.
Has anyone done this or know if it would be possible?

I was thinking of using a dremel to reshape the cut out for the trigger group and for the lip that fits into the receiver.

Any reasons why this wouldn't work?

It is possible and can work out well but is a bit of work. Depending on the amount of material removed, you will either have to shorten the screw or add a spacer between the screw and stock (a stack of washers works OK). It takes some careful work to maintain comb height, cast off, and camber.
 
I don't think it would help much, adding some wood in front and then not draping your thumb overtop the stock's wrist would maybe help .....Best solution (but not cheap @$150) is a Magpul stock...... if you don't mind plastic that is.
 
Thanks for the solid advice everyone! I had to look up a few things like "cast off" and "camber" to see what trouble I'd be getting into. I wouldn't mind a Magpul, and I still might go that route (especially if I butcher the existing stock).

I think adding wood to the stock is beyond my abilities. I'll give it some further thought and maybe proceed carefully with trimming a 1/4-1/2" off the top.

@Leeper, I forgot about the bolt length, thanks for the tip about the washers.
 
Just an update in case anyone is interested, I managed to shorten the stock on the receiver end. It took a couple hours with a dremel, and I was able to shorten it by about 7mm. Using a straight edge and vernier caliper helped to keep everything aligned.

I haven't shot it yet, but the length to trigger feels much better, and I'm happy that I could retain the face to hand distance.

Next project will be trying to finish the wood with a darker stain.
