I don't believe there is enough metal thickness to rethread a Remington 870 mag tube. The tube has to be removed from the frame and then shortened , then rewelded , brazed or silver soldered. because it is what holds the barrel in place. Now a Mossberg 500 has a mag tube that threads into the frame or reeiver and can be shortened at the front , then having the solid end plug rewelded in place. And yes a willing machinist or competent , well equiped gunsmith could shorten your mag tube but it would be a major and probably expensive project.A willing machinist or a competent, well-equipped gunsmith could shorten and re-thread your magazine tube.
