Shortening revolver barrel and fitting new front sight.

You're going to have to shorten the ejector housing, plunger and spring as well. The front sight should come off with a bit of heat. I believe they are soldered on.

Just about any gunsmith worth his salt should be able to take off that barrel and shorten it. There isn't any reason, if the smith has a lathe that's good for cutting threads, that it can't be shortened from the chamber end. It's sort of six of one and a half dozen of the other.

Numrich is out of stock if its the regular Blackhawk but they have a couple of used barrels for the Super Blackhawk for the 44 mag.

One of the banner importers could bring one in for you and the cost would be less than the work you want done.

Hi Bearhunter, thanks for the comment. for what I am looking at there is no work required on the ejector rod housing, etc. it is a 7.5" barrel that i would like cut back to 4 5/8". It would require the front sight work though. I checked at one place i have dealt with before and was given an estimate of $700-800.00, which i thought was on the high side. If I could obtain a take-off .357 barrel in the right length I would go that route. As far as I know, Ruger will not sell barrels unless you return the firearm to the factory, but that may have changed.

That's a ridiculous quote... $700-$800 !

All that would involve would be to remove the barrel (it unscrews from the action) and then remove the front sight (it is silver soldered on) and clean it up ready to reinstall, cut the barrel to length and crown, then install the barrel back on the action and solder the front sight back on using the action to index it square up.

If done carefully you may get away without re bluing the barrel.

Barry at Bits of Pieces in Delta did a 3 screw Blackhawk of mine for just over $100 if I recall correctly. Took 6 months to get it back but the work was flawless. Cut the barrel down, re-crowned and re-blued and reattached front site.

Why not take your time and find a deal on a Blackhawk with the barrel length you want then sell yours? Unless there's something special about the one in hand it seems like the simplest route.
Might come out even or even ahead a few bucks.

The revolver I am working with is a Bisley model and as far as I know it only came with a 7.5" barrel--If i found a decent priced revolver, I guess I could also just switch out the grip frame.
Another search i guess!
