Hey fellas,

I am curious I see all sorts of guys making shortie M14's now days, Some don't use scopes or red dots......Doesn't the shorter barrel and front iron sight change the overall function or use of the whole iron sight setup?

Hope that makes sense, I guess since the M14 has that rear peep sight setup, its different then say cutting down a SKS where the adjustment is in the middle of the gun?

Thanks

RTFM ...
I covered this in the Battle rifle sticky I wrote on how to shorten an M14 . There are pics of several different front sight treatments.

In general,
the stock M14 rear sights work well with the available replacement GRFS,
which usually have a vertically adjustable insert as the front sight post.

For use with the regular M14 front sight,
I make the front sight base about 1/10" higher,
or else cut down the rear sight leg a bit.

After cutting down about 100 of the 14s,
I've only found ahandful that absolutely had to have BOTH the higher front sight and the shortened rear sight.

I just picked up one of Bits of Pieces ] Norinco M14 Gas Ring Front Sights, which Barry tells me has the exact same height front sight base as a regular Norc M14.

ALL GRFS still have the same problem ....
they have clearances that allow them to rotate a few degrees either side of vertical, and unless reinstalled in the exact same place, may require reindexing and/or re-sighting in after the gas assembly has been dis-assembled and reassembled for cleaning.

HOWEVER,
I like this particular BoP version of a GRFS best of all of them,

The BOP GRFS is nicely machined to be perfectly square, with a big flat at the top, so it can be used an excellent tool for indexing during installation of the shorty barrels. Otherwise, without a decent indexing point, installing a shorty M14 barrel can be more of a guess than a science.

And believe me, if using a NORC front sight base, which may have the splines off by a few degrees, or the top flat of the front sight base off a whole bunch of degrees, installing and properly indexing any M14 barrel, can be an exercise in futility.

Which is why I recommend popping off the Norc flash hider to check for square and true, before deciding the barrel itself is what needs to be reindexed.
thanks Barry,

By function or use, are you talking about the BDC marking on the elevation turret?

I'm curious on this point. With the zero set at 200m, my 22" shoot PMC 145gr FMJBT a bit too high on the position 3 (at 300m) and 4 (at 400m). Maybe it would be better suited with real Nato ammo, still have to test that.

So with a 18.5" barrel you get less velocity but a shorter sight radius (more correction per click). Anyone using a load in their shortie that allow the elevation turret to work as intended?

Of course one can note his ballistic chart but having a precise BDC elevation turret (or reticle) seems like the ideal setup.
