So i want to get or build myself a shorty AR in 9mm.
There are so many differant uppers and lowers and i dont know what is best.
I did have a RRA 16 inch AR in 9mm that i bought from questar but wanted something shorter.
I see they have a CMMG 7' - 9MM Upper Half with FF Quad Rail, (complete with Ramped 9mm BCG & Charging Handle) for about 1200 bucks.
Would this be a good upper?it also states i should use the 223 hammer.Should i go for a longer one like 11.5.
In the future i might also want a 223 upper.
What about a lower whats good and whats not?
What about the 9mm mag block.I heard the best one is made by i believe its called Haan.
I want something that will work well and feed just about any factory ammo.
Thanks in advance.........

I've posted on here a number of times about my 9mm AR, but here's a bit more.

I bought a 7" barrel 9mm AR pistol from Questar. It is a "9mm NATO" and "Pistol Only" marked lower. I also used to have a 16". I would never get rid of this 7" though. It is one of the funnest firearms we are actually allowed to buy in Canada.

It seems that these are no longer really available, but if you can fine one, either the 7 inch or the 10.5 inch which are registered as handguns - I think they are the best 9mm AR you can get and I would highly recommend buying one. You don't really see these RRA 9mm shorties come up in the EE, and that is probably a pretty good indicator of what the owners think of them. One of the ROs at my range has had the 10.5 pistol for several years and it is still running strong. Another RO has the Carbon 15 9mm. They are also good, but I wouldn't trade a Rock River for one.

They can be a bit tricky to set up. The 16" was tempermental with various mags, but was 100% reliable with the plastic mags. The 7" has basically only ever been shot with the plastic mags and has always been 100% reliable. I have the RRA magwell, and it works well. I'm sure the Hahn one is fine too. The real lynchpin of the 9mm is the magazines though. Good mags = reliable. Wack mags = intense frustration.

My 9mm looked like this when I bought it:

That CMMG upper looks cool, and apparantly there are 9mm specifc lowers that are either there or are on the way. The best person to ask is "Questar Mark". I have found that he will give you no b.s. answers to questions about his products. If something is going to work better or worse for your purpose he will tell you.

I have not heard any reviews of 9mm CMMG stuff. It will happen eventually. As I say, I don't know if there is going to be any more RRA shorties in 9mm, so CMMG might be the only game in town right now. If you are supposed to use a .223 hammer with the CMMG 9mm upper, that seems like a good thing, as conversion to .223 would just be taking the magwell out and the buffer out. There are some integral (small) 9mm magwell guns out there, but if you have any intention of converting to .223, integral magwell will be a complete non-starter for you.

Coincidentally, I am currently putting together a CMMG mil-spec M4-type of thing, with the kind assistance of Questar. I don't think you can really go wrong with Questar personally. If something doesn't work out compatibility wise or whatever, they will sort it out for you. I know this first hand from when I had my 16" 9mm AR.

Thanks for the reply:)
I also bought my RRA 16 9mm from Questar and had some similar issuse. However your right about Questar they will work with you to make it right.I guess i will call them and see what they have comming in.
I wish i never sold the Glock AR that i bought from them a few years back.:(

Mark what would I need to besides the barrel to convert my .223 RRA 7.5" pistol that I bought from you into a 10.5 mm 9mm

A lot... you'd need to complete the 9mm upper so you'd need pretty much all of the upper half components (except the barrel :))... you'd also need to get a magwell adaptor for your lower... a 9mm buffer for the extension tube... and possibly a 9mm hammer (depends on who's 9mm BCG you decide to use).

You'd be better off just buying a 10.5" 9mm Upper Half complete, then all you'd have to add to that is the Magwell Adaptor, the RRA 9mm hammer and the 9mm buffer... and magazines.

What is the useful range of a 9MM AR? Is it just a Close Quarters thing, or can it reach out?

Mine is the one with the 7" barrel that can been seen at the beginning of this thread. I would say that useful range is around 100 yards, but it depends on what you call "useful".

At the rifle range at my club, the furthest we can shoot is about 230 yards. There are two gongs out at the very end of the range. It is not that hard to hit the gongs with a 9mm AR, but you have to aim around 3 feet (yes feet) high, or a little more.

At 25, 50 and 75 yards it is deadly accurate. Just put the 1 MOA dot on the EOtech right on desired point of impact and it will pretty much hit it right on. We usually shoot orange clays (sitting on the 25, 50 and 75 yard berms) this way. On the 100 yard berm, I put the 1 MOA dot just a little high, like, off the clay entirely... but just above it. So, I find that I have to get out to 100 yards before the drop becomes noticable. After 100 yards it is noticeable and, as I say, past 200 yards you are basically lobbing rounds on target.

My experience with the .45ACP USC has been about the same. Same goes for the 16" 9mm ARs. I used to have one, and a buddy of mine has one now. The extra barrel doesn't seem to make much, if any, difference. The 9mm AR is a very accurate firearm, but the 9mm cartridge just starts to really run out of gas beyond a couple hundred yards.
