I am working on an AR build that will eventually will be sporting a 10.5" or 11.5" barrel. I had asked the guys at Questar regarding barrels of that length and any new ones coming in in the near future. This was there response:

"Unfortunately the US State Department is not allowing AR barrels shorter
than 16" out of the US nor barrels marked 5.56 or if they are threaded. So
the barrels that are in the country currently are all that we will have for
the foreseeable future."

I have been looking around for someone in Canada who makes these barrels and came across S&J Hardware who make these sized barrels. Has anyone had experience with them or their barrels? Anywhere else I can go for a shorty barrel?
 
ATRS has 10.5" chrome-lined DPMS 5.56 threaded barrels in stock, but they are probably from before the export restrictions came into effect.

Also, NEA will be coming out with short AR barrels later this month, but they won;t be chrome lined if that matters to you?
 
Thanks guys I will certainly look into those. It is too bad that the NEA ones won't be chromed lined. Would make for cleaning so much easier. Any idea whether the S&J ones are chrome lined?

Why do you say that? Most of my rifles don't have chrome bores and cleaning them is no big deal. Just run some solvent through maybe with a bronze brush then run something through on a patch to protect the bore and you're done. I wouldn't let the lack of a chrome bore scare me off a good quality barrel.
 
I shoot with the Owner of S&J, good guy. SFRC carries his barrels, or you can talk to him direct and have him make up exactly what you want. I am planning on using one for a build I have in mind...

On another note about shorty builds, what other parts are an absolute requirement for a build that would be less than 10.5"? Do I need to put in a FA BCG? Heavier buffer? Muzzle compensator? Any advice that you guys can lend me, would be an immense help right now.

So far I have an Aero Precision lower and just ordered a Spike's A2 flat top upper receiver. I am planning on building a 10.5" setup.

For a 10.5 to run, you need a properly built barrel and the rest is gravy.

Assuming current parts:

-BGC, no difference between current SA and FA carriers. A Crane O-Ring is a good idea.

-Buy all three buffers (CAR, H, H2). Own them, and use what suits your ammo supply best. Powderpuff 223 reloads, go light, near-nuke 77GR NATO loadings, go H2. H is a nice compromise for a lot of ammo. I like the slower push of the H2 when possible. If a 10.5 NEEDS an H2 to run, you are compensating for issues elsewhere (but if it works, it works).

Compensator vs FH, not a barrel length issue other than a comp closer to your face is a comp closer to your face. For timed, competitive shooting, comps are a must when allowed. For otherwise shooting without a timer, a FH may be less offensive to the senses. Some comps have a little less bark while still offering reduced recoil (YHM Phantom).

We are just running another bunch of 10.3, 11.5 and some other shortie barrels.
We make ours from top name brand barrel makers blanks like Lilja and Rock Creek.
They are stainless so NOT chrome lined.

Chrome lined barrels ... it's a bit of a trade-off. Keep in mind many only have chrome chambers. Others use chrome moly steel.

A chrome lined barrel will last longer and may be a bit easier to keep clean, but it forfeits accuracy to a non chrome lined barrel.

Choices are good. Make one that's best for your type of shooting.
