Shot a wounded buck

I was out hunting a area i go to often and managed to come across a decent 6x5 whitetail buck, so i decided to take him.

The deer looked healthy but after shooting him i noticed a 5" long gash down the centre of the back, it was right through the hide, the hole was stuffed right full of hair but the wound had no blood and the bruised flesh underneath was already healing.

Question is would this part of the animal be good to butcher, or should it be cut out, looked like the buck got stuck by a antler fighting during the rut.
 
just cut away the discolored meat. everything else should be fine. If after you cut around the affected part, the rest of the meat still has a rotten smell then the game wardens should issue you a new tag. Lets see some pics of this buck.
 
The only pic i have is one a buddy shot with their cell phone, it is pretty blurry, i will try to get a pic of the rack when i go to butcher it, the deer is already skinned and beheaded.
Usually would have pic's but my camera bit the dust last hunting trip.

x2. Actually you can take the meat to the butcher and let them decide if the meat is good. If bad, he can call FW and possibly you get a new tag. My hunting buddy got a bull moose years back....dressed bull in field, back at camp skinning out we found a bullet hole in ..from the one hind knee up the meat was tainted thru the whole rear quarter and spreadfing thru the rest. Butcher called FW, they issued a new tag but only for the early season we just hunted and had no more days off to go get one...that sucked...tried to get a late season but they wouldnt go for it.

Anyhow up in northern Alberta whitetail tags are a general tag. Hopefully you can get a new one.

Possibility the wound was from fighting with another buck...antler puncture...seen it before.
 
There is no smell to the meat, and the bruised meat underneath is pretty much healed up, i think it should still be good. the hide and fat were peeled right up off of the meat but there was no hole in the flesh, there wasn't even any blood at the wound site
 
we shot a huge buck a few years back in December. When cleaning we found the ass end was full of puss ( litres of it). Further examination showed it was shot in the ass end with ssg's probably in the November shotgun hunt. We were advised not to eat the meat by the federal inspection agency, but Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources would not issue another tag

That sucks!
I had taken a fella out hunting South of Moose Jaw, where he ended up with an injured buck. Wasn't in terrible shape to watch him move, but limping. Meat was green and foul smelling when it was cut at the butchers. Yech. Last day of the season, or the CO had no problem with issuing another tag for that. Not much need by then. IIRC, the CO hooked him up with a carcass that had to find a home, shortly after, so he didn't get completely screwed.

A bud was cutting a deer that a co-worker had shot. He pulled a complete broadhead and a short section of arrow from it, had no other signs that it was injured the year (or years) before. The broadhead was embedded in the deers spine, but apparently not causing any visible distress.

I once watched a WT buck walk into a field to check out some does. It looked fine to me but when I skinned it it turned out that it had been shot through one ham already. I ended up tossing the one ham.

Thats nasty, almost turn one off deer meat. Rediculous that another tag was not issued as here in Manitoba they will re-issue if something is wrong with the carcass or internal organs. A good way to track or be aware of potential disease outbreaks.

This type of thing happened to us a few years ago too. Well, sorta. My cousin shot a nice 10 point the day after opening. It shotguns only in this area. Anyway, the deer was moving ok before he shot it and didn't seem to be crippled or anything. My cousin shot it with a 12g slug and dropped it where it stood. We cleaned the deer, grabbed the tractor and hung it up by it's hind legs so we could skin it. While skinning the rear section i noticed some weird holes in it's butt and a few broken bones. Upon closer inspection we noticed that this deer had been shot the previous day on the neighbors property by someone using 00 buckshot. Right up the arse as it was running away. Not cool but those neighbours were the definition of hillbilly and shoot at anything that moves in the bush. It's a wonder why they havn't shot each other over the years. Anyway, we ended up throwing out 1 rear quarter of the deer because it was all shot up and infection was starting to set into that area. Didn't ask for a new tag though.
 
Went out today and found a set of deer tracks with blood around them, followed them for a good mile and never found the deer, i think someone out there needs practice shooting or tracking

The federal inspection agency advised that infection travels through the blood and all the organs which could have a detrimental affect on one eating it as the infection would be through the whole body and not confined to the area the deer was shot.
