Shot bags..... what to do with them.

Has anyone found a use for old shot bags (assuming anyone else out there is still reloading)? I've got several dozen that I haven't been able to bring myself to throw out.

I've seen one guy who used some to patch holes in his jeans. Another guy I know sewed a few together for an ammo bag.

Any other ideas?

I used to fill them with used primers, double bag them and then sew the ends shut and use them for rifle rest range bags.... works like a charm and gets rid of two things at once :)

if nothing else after they are full donate them to your club and leave them on the rifle range for the guys to use.
 
Man, I wish I had some of those. As mentioned they make great sand bags for the bench. I prefer sand to used primers though . . . hmmm, thats a lot of primers.
 
shot bags

Have used them for 40 years to carry field loads. Get some some narrow latigo leather, punch small holes around the perimeter of the open end of the bag and thread the leather through them. Mark the load on the bag with a felt pen and once filled tie them shut with the leather.
 
Absolutely....if you know someone who can sew...they make great dust covers for reloaders. Ponsness sells covers for around $40.00 US or something like that. The cloth Hummasson bags work just great....took something like 4 bags I think per loader for mine.

The wife was sanding down/refinishing an old dresser in my shop and when I saw all the fine dust that was getting onto my 4 PW loaders...that was enough for me to get her into her sewing room and get to work.

Any concerns about lead dust even if you wash them thorougly?

Probably no more than reloading or shooting.

For a really inexpensive dust cover... Glad makes a nice one :) OR less expensive yet, a grocery bag.
 
I fill them with dried corn to use as rifle rests. Lighter than sand, and just as good. Or use them to cover the feet and top of ladders so they don't mar the floor or walls.

Used them as "lightweight" decoy anchors.... put a clip on the end of your decoy line - two opposing grommets in the top edge of the shot bag. When you get to where you're going to hunt, fill the shot bag with rocks and clip the decoy bag shut .

Something we had to come up with for windy days and shore blinds - for Whistler hunts in rough weather. Didn't want to carry in a lot of extra weight into and out of the blind location, as it was about a half mile walk to get there. The shot bags will easily hold 5 lbs. or more of rocks ( available all over the shoreline where we hunted) and hold really well in the wind with a decoy line about 2-1/2 times the water depth.
 
Besides using them for bench shooting they work well when 1/3 filled with sand as a wieght to stop the voice release mic stands from blowing over on windy days. Alot of clubs have a post for at 16yrds but when you move back for handicap they will blow over on windy days. When 1/3 full they are heavy enough to keep the stands up but not so heavy that they are trouble to move when shooting in a group of different yardage shooters. The thing I'm trying to find a good use for is all the empty plastic 8lb powder jugs I have. They are too nice a jug to throw out but I've yet to find a really good use for all the ones I have.

For the 8lb jugs with handles like Unique, I cut a big hole in front, while leaving the handle. From there I use them for pistol brass. You could probably keep enoungh shotgun ammo in one to make due for a one day outing.
