This target is typical of those that I shoot with this rifle.

It has the VQ trigger hammer and extractor upgrades (the rifle has yet to have a FTF or FTE).

597's are great despite the bad reputation they seem to have. I just picked up a .22lr and 3 eagle mags yesterday. Plan on grabbing the VQ parts and some Firesights from Rimfiresports.

There were problems with early generation 597 magazines, but that appears to have been effectively dealt with sometime ago by subsequent design changes. It would also seem that 597 owner experiences can vary depending on which flavour they have... .22LR, .22WMR, .17HMR or the heavy barrel versions.

I bought my .22WMR model last winter and have put well over 1000 rounds through it ...all without any problem whatsoever (none). It's been an accurate rifle since day one and I have no regrets for having purchased it.

I bought mine in .22WMR trim to give myself a little more 'elbow room' in terms of range. Having shot alongside .22LR 597's, I have the impression that .22WMR ammunition provides a more positive cycling of the action as well ...aside from the extra 'Oomph' of the magnum round itself, the bolt used in the .22WMR 597 is significantly heavier than the one that comes with the .22LR version (which might be part of the reason why I've never experienced a FTF or FTE). Magnum ammunition is more expensive, but - at only $8-$10 for a box of 50 - it's still a cheap date.

Nice groups. You ever try it at 100 yards. I get great groups out of my Marlin 25MN at 100 yards and she's hardly a target rifle. I've always found 50 yards no contest for a 22wmr.

The nickle-sized 50 yard groups are becoming a little too predictable to be much of a challenge, so yes ...I will need to start spending some time on the 100 yard range.

My mistake... I just checked... it's a dime.

The only other thing that I would do to this rifle to make it better is increase its length-of-pull ...which is just a little on the short side for me. I should think that adding a spacer or two between the butt plate and the stock would be fairly minor surgery, so perhaps I'll get it done when I drop the rifle off to my gunsmith for its annual check-up over the winter.

"...That's some mighty fine shooting!..."

Thanks ...but the hardware setup really deserves the credit. I've little doubt that most of us here could have accomplished the same result if they were the one squeezing the trigger.

At 50 yards with the Leupold glass set to x12 and its variable objective dialed-in to eliminate parallax, the rifle puts a 44gr .22WMR CCI round right where the crosshairs are ...as in exactly. The spread that you see in the grouping - such as it is - is the result of my hearbeat. When aiming, I can actually see the crosshairs move ever-so-slightly in time with my pulse (regardless of how securely I hold the rifle).

Now I know why competition target shooters wear jackets that dampen their body movement!

WOW ... nice gun and nice shooting, beautiful scope and good shooter ....congrats.

I guess most of 597 are very accurate, my 597 22lr is also does the size
of a quarter at 50yrd on ten shots, after the gun is gone thru a couple
thousand rounds now. It's my competition gun for now at the club.
I saw the yellow jacket in stock now.

I like my 597 at competitions too, I recently found I can shoot uniterrupted strings standing with ease and good score. Like 3-4 shots before I have to lower the rifle and rest. With bolted rifles I am nearly exhausted by the end of standing round.
