Hi folks,

Prolly a stupid NB question, so I thought this was the place for it.

I am shopping for a 12 Ga shotgun. Either a coach gun or a pump. Most of the combat type pump guns I see are 18", isn't the Canadian limit 18.5"?

Bill

For manually operated shotguns there is no minimum berrel length limit, the shortest I've seen was 6.5", as long as the over all length is above 26" it is non restricted.

Cool, thanks!!

I have learned a ton already, only been here for a day!

I thought we were limited to 3 shots in the mag too, but not so with a pump!!:)

Thanks again!

Bill

There is no barrel length limit as long as the overall shotgun length is greater than 26 inches.

The barrel cannot be cut down to less than 18.5". It must be manufactured at less than 18.5".

As well there is no limit on a manual feed shotgun magazine capacity but you are still limited when hunting. Read your provincial hunting regs for hunting magazine capacity limits.

Sounds good, Thanks!

I don't plan on any hunting but it would be good to make sure!! I plan on mostly target and hopefully some clay birds.

"...hopefully some clay birds..." Short barrels aren't so great for that. Mind you, they're very good for upland birds. The really short barrels are useless for any kind of hunting or target shooting.

Am I gonna go to the Trap World Championships and have a several hundred clay run with my Outlaw or 8.5 inch grizzly? No, I'm not. But for the purposes of chucking a clay in the air and busting it, I would NOT call these guns useless. The only "useless" gun is a deactivated one. Ask Canam or Dlask, how many "useless" barrels they've sold. Seems to me that there are lots of folk who've found a use for them, and we've not seen any on the 6 o'clock news for holding up 7-11's, so that leaves hunting or target shooting. Upland birds, rabbits, various critters are hunting, and these guns do fine in those roles. Blowing stuff up on the range, or shooting non-competetive clays, sounds like target shooting to me. Heck, some guys like to carry them in bear country, as a compromise between weight and firepower, especially given the ease at which a non-restricted shottie can be used as opposed to getting a wilderness ATC.

There's only one "useless" barrel around this board, and it's not attached to any shotgun.
