Friend of mine asked me if I can take his Enfields to the range and see if they still work. Hes got about half a dosen of them, all rusty pieces of scrap at first glance. After a bit of scratching my temple I put together jungle carbine - I like the way it looks - by borrowing bolt out if that one and rear sight from another one. Cleaned the bore and put a first round through it. Well first round I didn't even bother aiming for I held it with arms outstretched and eyes closed. After that it took a little bit of hammering on front sight but otherwise it was close anough to put shots on paper. Will post pictures tomorrow cuz photobucket doesn't work today. I got descent groupings at 100 yards. About 2" or smaller. I heard a lot about Enfields being a total garbage when it comes to accuracy - well the one I was shooting today for excellent gun. Honestly I couldn't even see the bull of a target properly at 100yds but got some holes touching each other. Guy beside me was getting way bigger groups off his stainless Rueger in 308 caliber with laminate stock and telescope ( there is no other word for that piece) on top of it, even though he used handloaded ammo. Needless to say I was shooting factory Remington 303 ammo. So, what would you people say, is it normal for Enfield JC or have I just got lucky?

The other question is, where do I get one for myself? That friend of mine doesn't want to sell plus hes running the idea that his Enfields are some kind of a treasure, like 1000$ a piece even thought hes got most of them for free. I wasn't smart enought to bull#### him how bad hes gun is, its too late.

My all-matching, Shirley made No.5 shoots 3-4" at 100 yards with Winchester Powerpoints but that is probably my fault.

There are usually a couple of No.5's kicking around the EE ranging in price from $250 for mismatches/bubbas to $450 for all matching VG's.

thanx geologist. What is "EE"? Here is picture of one of my targets, two groups of 2 shots. Two shots - cooling for a few minutes - two shots.

Well, owner generously agreed to let me have the gun for this hunting season, if I clean it up a bit. But if I see one for sale I will probably buy it.

The Enfield is great rifle. Lots of info on Milsurps.com. Just remember what they were intended for........shooting, you're not going to use it for precision rifle class shooting but for general and hunting they are good. People that don't like them ,obviously don't have one.

Have fun with it and good shooting.

Enfields being total garbage as far as accuracy?
From the skill at arms handbook;
"your weapons are given you to kill the enemy"
Enfields have been doing just that for over 100 years and are still doing it in some parts of the world.
Now expecting match accuracy from a rifle that most likely has gone through two world wars and a lot of little ones in between is asking a bit much.;)

You sure you weren't looking at each other's targets? The photo of the target is quite impressive to say the least.

"...borrowing bolt out of that one..." Check the headspace did you?

What is headspace? How do I check it? I have all tool I might need - micrometers, collippers and whatnot, only if I knew what it is. Thank you beforehand, sunray.

Another question is - how do I get access to EE forum? It always appears locked to me. Is it some kind of secret underground sect?

To check headspace you need a headspace guage. It's a solid milled piece of steel or brass that looks like the bottom half of a cartridge. You could buy a set (go, no-go, field), but all you really need is the field guage. Brownell's sells them for ~$29. I bought mine from a member here, you could place a "want to buy ad" in the EE Parts an Bits section.

Roughly speaking, headspace is the clearance between the back of a properly seated cartridge in the chamber and the bolt. Too little, the bolt doesn't close or is extremely finicky over dirt or tolerances, too much and the cartridge can rupture. A few thou of an inch is the kind of precision we are talking about here, and its why you can't just assemble unmatched parts that affect it.

There are guys that set the headspace on Savage rifles by placing a thin piece of paper behind a properly sized cartridge, it should just close the bolt, with no room to spare. I'm not recommending this unless you know all the details, and I don't.
