Just wondering what everyone here has to say about what the most, for lack of a better word, aggressive ammo you would put through a full choke, or even turkey choke, tube.
Always heard never to put steal shot or slughs through it, for a couple obvious reasons, but i want to know what is the maximum you all draw the line at?

I still need something that will reach out and touch the geese as best possible

It seems like most manufacturers say that improved modified is the tightest choke you can use steel with. I thought some of the more premium offerings that used tungsten or other non-toxic steel alternatives were safe in a full choke but I'm not certain.

Apparently shooting large steel shot through a tighter choke will screw your patterns up, there is really no advantage to it. I shoot BB through a Mod choke and it seems to work fine, but I usually only make close shots.

I am shooting a Stoeger 3500 with a reduced barrel down to 24" with Carlson chokes.
My decoy spread is ugly and I am poor so I end up having to snipe geese from a ways out.
So, for example, would tungsten t's and bb's type shot go through ok you think?
My full coke is a .700 and the Turkey slightly tighter yet.

So much mis information here why do people just reply with guesses to mis lead. If you are shooting a lead shot you can shoot anything in a full choke even a slug but for slugs it is best for IMP cylinder or even just straight cylinder.

Obviously the bigger shots like buckshot 000 buck you might not get as tight patterns with full choke but depending on the choke some people get great results.

As for steel..... now this is where everyone provides #### they read on a cereal box or something, steel you have to be more careful because certain chokes will actually state the biggest size steel shot they can take safely some will even say a certain size shot with a FPS to not exceed.

Example one choke might say no bigger steel shot than BB with a velocity of 1400fps (just using random numbers)

So really you have to take the time to figure the choke you are using if it doesn’t say on the side of the choke than try and look up the manufacture online as not all chokes are made equal.

Hope this helps sorry for any weird typos

Just go to their website...

FLUSH MOUNT REPLACEMENT CHOKES#
Carlson's offers a full line of flush mount chokes in 12ga and 20ga for most shotguns. These chokes are manufactured from 17-4 heat treated stainless steel. These chokes may be used with lead or Hevi-Shot in all constrictions. Steel shot larger than BB should not be used in any choke tighter than Full.

I have patterned my waterfowl shotgun using Kent Fasteel BB, and once I reached MOD the patterns became less uniform, so there was no advantage to a tighter choke than LM in my gun. Your load/choke combination may produce slightly different results. The people that I hunt with are also shooting LM chokes as well because it was as tight as they could go and still have uniform patterns. If you really want more range, you might try tungsten loads , but the best way to kill geese farther, is to practise more on clays, so you can place the pattern better at longer ranges. Of the people that I hunt with, the better shooters kill more geese, at longer distances, than the lesser skilled shooters, even though the lesser skilled shooters tend to use the high priced 3-1/2" specialty loads like Black Cloud or Blindside.

Stubblejumper has boiled it down to the essentials. If you are worried about damaging your chokes, follow the choke manufacturer's recommendations. If you want to get the longest effective killing range from a particular load, pattern this load in the chokes you are considering and go with your tightest most even patterns. Sorry, there is no easy quick substitute for actually doing this work yourself with your own gun, chokes and ammunition.

And the number one reason for not killing geese, is not being able to place the pattern on the bird. If you can put the pattern on the head neck area, you will kill a lot more birds, regardless of the choke and ammunition you choose.

Spot on, last year I watched a friend shoot at 4-5 grouse and miss everyone. They were between 10-30yrd away, some standing still and a couple flushed. I asked him if he had patterned his shotgun, he said no lol.

Lead thru anything
I shoot up to #2 steel in full choked guns
Normally for steel shot i use cyl or ic
Bismuth i shoot thru down to xf

For slugs and buck i go to full

Patterning is the key. With steel shot I dont see a reason to go past a mod and a good shell that agrees with the barrel and choke system. I have used improved mod with bb with no issues though. Usually I use my guns favorite shell and ic choke, still get more hits in a 30 inch circle than most other shells will with the mod choke at 40 yards. Talking bb sized shot here. All the average bb loads out there I'd just use a mod. 2s to 4s are easier to find a good load. Mod or imp mod for long range and ic for 30 yards and less.

Big shot is where it gets iffy. I love 1.25 ounce of a certain manufactured bbb load through a ic. Nice even patterns with over 70 percent I the 30 inch circle. Choke it any tighter it shows signs of a blown pattern.

T shot I wouldn't dare shoot through a mod. Ic and a 1.25 certain manufacturers load of t shot shoots very tight at 40 yards with an average of 58 out of 67 hitting the 30 inch circle, but the pattern is mostly in 24 inches. Very tight. You would be asking for trouble choking it more.

I had a patternmaster code black goose. Did some patterning it with 2, bb, and then 2 shots of bbb bulged it. Ruined. 1.25 ounce at 1450 fps
