Shot size for geese

Yeah, most people BB size shot, but there are BBB users and some occasionally use even bigger shot and there are a few that use #1 or even # 2 shot on close decoying birds or Snow geese.

Hi Happydude.....I have never hunted geese with steel before either.....but I plan to this year...I bought 3 boxs of different 3" BB's....I'm going to shoot some paper and see what patterns the best....

I used to use #2 lead.....in the good old days:rolleyes:

Might be a bit of a learning curve for me with steel..

I've been into the kent faststeel BB's I believe in 3 1/2 patterned best. IMO the remington hevishot is hevicrap. Never had any luck with it especially for the price. Give em a try though.

I use bb for geese, however last year I tried a box of bbb and works well too. I shoot the Kent fasteel with improved cylinder choke. I want to clean up alot of my 2's I use for ducks, so I will put in a modified choke and use that. Alot of people are using 2's for geese as well. I want to use one thing for ducks and geese and will probably use 1's for everything after that.

shot size

I have been using #6 hevi shot over decoys and its works just dandy. usually in late Oct I may swith to #4 hevishot. Do yourself a favor and trat yourself to a box...

Steel shot is mandatory for geese in every reg I have read....

Not quite right. NON TOXIC shot is required for waterfowl. This includes bismuth and tungsten based shot as well as steel. Both bismuth and tungsten provide shot density similar to lead - something every fowler should consider.

Not all geese are created equal!
If hunting only Greater Canadas (8lbs & up) use steel BBB's in a 3" shell or #2 or BB Bismuth, or #1 in Tungsten Matrix or #4 or #2 Hevi shot.
Lesser Canadas, Snows & Specklebellies, ( 4-6 lbs) #2 or #1 steel or #4 or #2 Bismuth or #3 or #1 TM or #4 hevi shot. What's right depends on the distance you'll take a shot, the choke of your gun, and what patterns best in your gun. In most cases, Modified choke is best but IC or IM may be better. Full choke is almost never best except for pass shooting with TM shot. I have used ALL these combinations on a great many geese. Now I normally shoot 12 ga. 2-3/4"#1 Fasteel for everything, out of a modified choke, for birds over decoys. In a "normal" morning of field shooting in Saskatchewan we have mallards and pintails at dawn, (and some Specks if we're lucky), Lesser Canadas a little later, followed by Snows & Ross', then the Greater Canadas show up if we haven't limited out by 9am. Don't stretch you range too far and the Fassteel #1's will do the job for everything within 40 yards. If you need to stretch range or specialize, see my previous suggestions and PATTERN YOUR GUN!

Anything but lead is what I should have said, I know about Bismuth, Tungsten and the others. You can throw rocks if ya like, as long as they are not lead rocks.:D

I really like the fast steel 3" bb's for gees. In fact I use it for for ducks also just because it patters very well out of my gun.

This year I will use this Challenger 3" bb's I got at epps. They had it on for $10 / box so i bought a bunch. I hardly go through 3 boxes a year on geese and ducks so I really should invest in some tungsten because it really wouldnt cost me much more.

I think I'll give BB's a try then. Honestly, I'm just going to be shooting birds in the back 40 where there are no wetlands so I'll be shooting lead though I will give steel a try.

Other than pointing the muzzle skywards I have no idea what I'm doing.
