I do some trap shooting. Nothing competitive and reload my own shells. Like to use WAA hulls and usually use 1 and 1/8 oz. of # 8 shot. Lately with the price of lead it is getting hard to get shot. I have a number of 25 Lb. bags of various shot left over from field loads. I am talking about mostly # 4,5,6 shot. How would these shot sizes perform at the trap range? Should I use them up there or what? Should I change my chokes if I use them to get similar results to the #8's? Would like a few expert opinions on the topic. The price of lead now a days is unreal. Do not really care about the birds I bust but I also do not want to embarrase my self

Depending on where you shoot you may embarass yourself by being asked to leave the range. Most clay clubs have very specific restrictions on shot size with nothing larger than 7-1/2 allowed due to approved shot fall distances. Use larger shot and you may be contravening the club's range approval.

If the larger shot goes off the property and onto a neighbour's land you might face the embarrassment of having to explain to fellow shooters why the club was closed down because you didn't load the right size of shot.

Not a problem here at all as we are a very small club and do not bother people about the type of ammo they use. Our down range field is quite liberal and we have never had a problem.

I am concerned with the performance however. And as I said do I need to use different chokes or whatever?

Size 6 contains about 64 percent of the pellets as a load of 7-1/2's,
4's about 39 percent of the same load of 7-1/2's .... pretty sketchy
patterns for a Trap load.

Why not load them up and go shoot some crows ... a very positive conservation measure. Nice black targets with wings !!! :D
