I have to say, I really am turning into a wuss. She pounded pretty good, but it was fun. After I got the windage lined up, I settled in and put three Winchester softpoints into a little over an inch. It heated up good after three shots, but it was warm today too. The muzzle didn't really jump, even though I only had it resting on foam. The rifle recoiled nice and straight back. The pad is a hockey puck. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It would have felt better had it been wider. The way it is now, it tends to dig in, but it isn't painful, really. All in all, she should prove to be a hunting rifle, and not a bench rifle. But I think it will be very good at it.

................How was it grouping??? Mine was no hell the other day so i am making up a whack of loads with three diff. powders. It was a pussy cat recoil wise i thought.

Thanks, but I'll just suck it up. I never got a headache from it, but I must admit the recoil went right down to my knee's, which were just starting to feel better. It's hard to belive just what parts of you can affect your shooting. :(

try handloading to a velocity that you find comfortable. As you get used to your new rifle, Im sure you'll be fine anyways

If you plan on keeping it, why not put a limbsaver or kick-eze pad on it? How heavy is that Hawkeye anyways, it shouldn't really recoil that badly.

I have a M77 MKII in 30-06 and it is great, but I thought the same thing you did about the hockey puck recoild pad. I ended up putting a Pachmyer Deccelerator pad on mine and it made all the difference, it helped the LOP for me also. I have never seen the point of beating yourself around if you do not have to; that being said I have a Ruger No1 Tropical in the basement in 375 H&H for no real reason than to get raised eyebrows when i take it deer hunting :).

You really can't go wrong with a Ruger if you are looking for a tougher than nails hunting rifle.

So why do our gun makers chimp out on the recoil pads anyway? I'm sure they could upgrade to something half decent like Remington's R3 pad. Although I find it too "squishy" it's a lot better than the anti skid plates on most factory stocks.

The Ruger hawkeye stainless Ive seen in 204 & 22-250, both had a decelerator type pad on them...also the Ruger M77 hawkeye alaskan in 375 ruger has a decelerator, although its stamped Hogue IIRC

I got a chance to shoot one in 30-06 the other day as well. Fella up here was demo-ing them. I really like the trigger on the one I was shooting anyways. Best group I got was just under 1.5 inch with factory 168 BST's

@ Pharoah2:

Get a Limbsaver. I'll preach Limbsaver till the day I die. They take ALL the snap out of a light rifle.

FWIW, I had a Mtn Rifle in 30-06 that kicked WAY worse than any 300 magnum I've shot. Limbsaver made it feel like a light 308.
