Just bought my first shotgun, a 12 gauge Remington 870 and brought it with me to my country place to try out. Problem was I forgot the ammo, some 7 shot and had to buy some at the local store. They only had 3 shot and wow does that kick! I busted my shoulder (clavicle, surgery was 4 weeks ago, along with 4 ribs in a moto accident) so I shot it left shoulder first just to see the recoil and man, I'm glad I did!
How much less recoil is the 7 shot (both 3")? I would like to be able to shoot from my right shoulder but with the 3 shot I'll need several more weeks I'd say.
Also, can I fire 2 5/8th slugs out of this gun safely?
Thanks guys and sorry for the newbie questions.

Shot size doesn't determine the amount recoil. The combination of shot weight and velocity determine the resulting recoil. Stick with 2 3/4" shells that have a shot weight of 1oz or less and a muzzle velocity of 1250fps or less.

shot gun recoil Remington 870

Hey ..I had the same thing a while back

I converted all of my shotguns and high powered rifles recoil pads to good ones

For example if your Rem 870 has a plain factory recoil pad ...get the new R 3
it will reduce the felt recoil by a lot !
you may also want to look at other magnufactures such as Pachmyre etc....
You could also add for yourself a decelerator shoulder pad (ie: PAST availble at most gun shops )
and yes as mentioned before use some low recoil ammo for a while in 2'' 3/4

Have fun

If you value your health then it'd be more prudent to consult your doctor in the first place instead of asking questions (that aren't exactly newbie related) on a gun forum as to what type of stress one could place on a damaged shoulder!!

I appreciate the concern and I am not doing anything that can be detrimental tok my recovery. I have shot the gun from left arm and found it to have far too much recoil to shoot from my right (broken side). I should mention that I have a plate and screws so the shoulder is stable and pain free.
The newbie question is what load is easier on my shoulder when I start shooting from the correct (right) side? Since I have only shot 3" 3shot and found it pretty heavy duty.
Does anyone know if I can shoot 2 5/8" cartridges out of the 870 I have?
Thanks

You probably mean 2-3/4", but yes, you can shoot any shell up to the length specified on the gun.
