Hi all. Pardon my lack of knowledge here.
Interested in a Benelli M4, but this would apply to all shotguns as well. I've see a few with 14'' barrels listed as restricted and a few as NR.
Does the classification of the shotgun as R vs NR depend on total length and would the telescoping stock play a role in the measurement?
Thanks in advance.

It's a semi auto center fire. Restricted because barrel length under 18.5". can only hold 5 rounds. Pump shotguns are non restricted if they are over 26". You can mount a factory made barrel under 18.5" as long as the length isn't less than 26" you can not cut down any barrel shorter than 18.5"

Firstly, and very importantly;
The rules are VASTLY different for pumps vs semi-autos.

Pumps have no rules on barrel length, and no limits on capacity.

The gun you're asking about (Benelli M4) is an automatic. So you'll need to get one with at least a 18.5" barrel to be non-restricted.

Collapsing stock vs non-collapsing stock is a non-issue. You're overall length will be more than 26" regardless.

To my knowledge any centre-fire long gun has to have a barrel 18.5" or longer (in Canada). That is why when I came across the below 12ga, I couldn't understand how it could be classified as Non-Restricted with a 12" barrel. I can't see being single shot having anything to do with it.

Edit: OK, for non-semiauto, it is overall length greater than 26", barrel any length as long as it left the factory that way and you didn't shorten it. Finding more of them out there:

Semi auto vs manaul.

Semi auto is 470mm/18.5 inch barrel and with overall length.

Manual is overall length only.

Being single shot has everything to do with it.

If you need your shotgun to be non-restricted, Benelli makes a beautiful pump action 14" barrel Supernova Tactical that is similar in appearance to the M4.
Love mine! There's nothing quite like the feel and sound of racking the pump action.
