I'm so happy to switch back to a gun (from the bow...), here's why:
This BIG buck came in running towards some hot doe urine scent wicks I had set-up. He was super motivated to find "it" not really paying attention to much else. I was in my tree-stand well out of view when I heard a branch snap. This quickly sharpened up my senses as I had just started to zone-out. He slowed down a bit just as I was shouldering my shotgun. When he was between two trees at about 60yds out, he got 1oz of solid copper right in the heart and through both lungs. He did a 180 and ran about 30yds before he crashed. Got him at about 4:15pm on Monday 05 Nov 2007.
This is the fun part of the story. Now the work begins. The landowner was away for the night - with the keys to the tractor! I had no other vehicle that could get to him so I called up a great buddy who helped me drag him out. It took a lot more than a couple of hours to drag this big guy about half a kilometre up a 30 degree hill through the bush. I think the pouring rain may have helped him slide across the leaves but it sure made it slippery under-foot!!!! Good thing my buddy likes deer meat too!!! The beer tasted awesome when we were done.
Here are a couple of pics - didn't even think to stand with it - too tired.... Yes we amputated his legs from the knee down to reduce weight and make him more aerodynamic as he slid up-hill. The beam he's hanging from is 8ft high - he's huge...
