So I recently bought a versamax to start 3 gun, and am going to send it to Tacords for them to work on it, but the question I have is, do I have the 26" barrel cut down or leave it. Does the few inches make that much of a difference (insert dirty joke here). Also I have heard that if the barrel gets the vang comp treatment or barrel porting will move you to an open class, is there any truth to that?

26" is fine if you are comfortable with it. I run a 28" bbl on my M3000 and do not feel handicapped at all by it. Cutting the bbl will be a purely personal choice.

Several years ago shorter bbl's were all the rage (21 - 22") but that fad has largely gone away with the top US competitors. Average bbl length of the pro's seems to have settled around 24".

Open class requirements will differ from club to club and their rules.

Any matches I've been involved in, a ported shotgun barrel puts you in open.
Even the use of a ported choke will put you in Open division. Best to decide which division you want to be in first as once you put any hole in the barrel, there's no turning back without ordering a whole new barrel to get back into Standard div. As for the barrel length, sometimes short is better for moving the gun through ports and around barricades, but it's not really needed. Give it a try with what you have and if you want it shorter, the barrel can always be sent back to Tacord for the haircut.
