Thinking about getting one of these for waterfowling. What is the current consensus, e.g., are they useful, do they just get in the way, reliability etc? ShotKams seem to be the most common but are also an investment? Any other options to consider? thanks

I have had them all and just like buying a gun if you go cheap you get what you pay for. One word to save you a pile of frustration and money in the long run? SHOTKAM!

They now offer a Gen 4 mini if saving a couple ounces is a concern but it also means you sacrifice a bit of battery life. I run a Gen 4 and my wife a Gen 3. Either will serve you well!

How many pics will shotkams take
I doesn't take pics it takes video. It has an internal storage capacity. I'd have to look at the manual to see the amount of storage it has but I've never run out on a hunt. You can run it continuously but that is a huge waste of storage space and battery instead you set it to go into sleep mode and wake up through motion to come to life to film when needed. In that mode it makes a series of short videos you can review on your phone right out in the field via the app if you want or plug it in to your pc when you get home and transfer the files. I've had as much as two months worth of files left in it and never run out of space.

Thanks for the advice, gents. Shotkam it is.

Just found one of your videos in an older thread, spank. Amazing!

I use the shotkam, my is the gen 3 (it was on sale and I'm poor lol) and it works amazing. The 4 mini sound like a great choice for hunting.
I had seen some gens 3 on sale as well. Was leaning that way but they are all gone. The 4 mini looks good. I'll have to think about the battery life. I'm rarely out for more than 4 hours at a time so shouldn't be an issues but batteries do deteriorate.

Jonny from TGS on YouTube had the same question about battery life on the gen 4 mini and shotkam suggestion was one of those battery backs you can get off Amazon for charging phones.

Watch the EE, I've seen a few come up for sale at decent prices that were in mint shape.
