I am trying to find out what would be the best option for replacing deteriorating foam inside an over/under 4 barrel set case. Should I redo with foam or look into redoing it with felt. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

If you're a DIY'er with some wood working tools I'd probably go with the wood rear plate and separators covered with felt. Many types of foam brings in the issue of the foam's porosity and ability to retain cool moist air during transport and that air affecting the barrels. So the best and proper foam to use is the closed cell style. But closed cell foam isn't easy to find and is darn pricey when you do. On the other hand thin plywood is easy to locate and work with and felt is also easy to find. An option to felt would be polyester fleece material which is even more common at any fabric store.

Rather than cheap polyester felt (which is about all you can find these days) I've found following my wife to her favourite fabric stores and hunting around for 100% wool Melton coating material fills the bill. Nice strong, beautiful napped material in lots of subdued colours, just like you would find in a best English gun case. If your going to do a nice job, spend ~ $40 and have it look and work great.
Lots of talk about using pool table material, but that be even pricier, harder to find by the yard, and it's thinner material.
