I have an 870 (from the CRAFM order) that I'm refinishing. I have a hogue foregrip on it and I'm going to blast the reciever at work this week before I give it a hit of Coyote Brown Duracoat.

I want to pay homage to the service this gun's seen overseas so I'm going to engrave a small canadian flag on the reciever under the ejection port. But I'm looking for other ideas as well... At work here I have a shiny new laser engraver that I'd like to test out a bit so I can do almost any amount of detail and varying depth's and I would like to hear what you guys would put on a semi tactical shotgun. (IE none of the fancy scrolling and geese seen on bird guns...)

I'd try to find the motto of the unit it was sent overseas with... engrave that and the unit emblem. or the standard CDN Forces emblem.

Hm... that'd be very cool but I have no idea how I'd even go about finding that out.

Front Towards enemy could be good... maybe I'll put something along those lines on the barrel.

I thought that these were ex-police guns, not from the military. All the shotguns we had overseas were 18" Police Magnums with regular buttstock and parkerized, not blued.

The Canadian Forces symbol looks like crap, nothing cool about it at all, just ask the guys that have to wear the "cornflake" in basic.

How are you going to do the engraving? CNC, electro pencil, trophy shop?

I don't need to ask anybody, I was more than happy to switch mine for my unit's own a while back, but it was more out of love for the unit than hate for the standard symbol. It is what it is... yet engraved on a 870 I still think it might look nice.

I had to wear the cornflake in my Basic... I was never fond of it either. I might do the Army CDN Maple leaf with the crossswords in the background or something like that. A little nicer then a canadian flag, but not as lame as the cornflake.

I have a laser engraver at work. It's a big tray thingy and we hook it up to the computer, and click print. Super intuitive and user friendly setup and we can get INCREDIBLE detail out of it. A lot of trophy shops use them for name plates and plaques. If worse comes to worse I could always mask it off and sandblast it at work too. We make masks from film negatives so I can get pretty good detail that way too, but it won't look quite as clean.

Whatever you end up doing, you'll have to post pics. I'd like to have some stuff engraved myself, but I'm worried how it would turnout.

What about the "flaming bomb", it would be very suitable for such a heavy piece of ordnance.

Google it or go to the canadian army forum, they'll be able to help you with the motto search. A maple leaf would look cool, nice and simple.

These are some of the ideas I was playing around with last night. (Well I wasn't really playing as I was just pulling all the vectored artwork I have for the army/gov't out of the old database at work...)

I'm thinking of doing either the second from the top (Army Flag) or the very bottom one (CDN Army).

I'll post pics of the progress. I'll try to remember to bring a camera to work so I can get some pictures of the laser doing it's thing.

I'm sure I could get the motto, but I was referring to how I could trace it back to the unit it was in service with. I mean all I have is a serial number...

First off, these are not ex-military shotguns, they are ex-police guns.

If this gun was ever overseas, and it wasn't, it would have served with every unit that has ever gone over there, as the shotguns remain overseas.

I've been in the Infantry for ten years and the only shotguns I've ever seen have been Police Magnum (3"chamber), parkerized (not blued), and with a fixed buttstock and synthetic forend.

Not trying to be negative but you seem to want to pay homage to a gun that never left the country, probably never left whatever city it served as a Police gun.
