Shotgun for trap amateur

I have shot a few dozen rounds of trap but it was usually with a shotgun not designed for trap. As I am interested in shooting more seriously a new gun is required. Any suggestions on a decent gun that can be slightly modified for a better fit. Hoping to spend about $1500 plus a couple of modifications if required.

One point is that I shoot left. I have been having trouble figuring out what eye is dominant, so I chose to shoot left either with my right eye closed or my lens blacked out as two-eyed shooting is a little out of my experience range just yet.

I wouldn't be closing one eye, you're eliminating 50% of your vision. It's going to be vital when you want to shoot skeet. I'm left eye dominant, and I shoot right. It honestly just takes practice. Go twice a week for 1 month and you'll be shooting +20 every single round. After that it's just technique and muscle memory.
 
If you are generally right handed, I suggest you try shooting right handed. Tape your left eye and shoot with both eyes, if possible. The vast majority of the guns out there are for right handed (90%) people. Part of the "fit" equation is some cast off for a right handed shooter or cast on for a left handed shooter. If you look at newer guns or custom stocked ones, you will usually see a lot of twist in the stock.

$1,500 is a good number to get you a lightly used Beretta or Browning. Make sure you don't get one that is worn, as it will cost a good dollar to bring it back to good condition. Try everything you can and shoot lots before you buy. The more guns you shoot, with different stock configurations, the better you will understand what will work best for you.
 
I just bought (month ago) a used Browning BT-99 with adjustable comb in like new condition for $800 and got the dealer to throw in a IM choke just because I asked. The gun came with a full choke. The down side to the BT-99, it is not a good choice for shooting doubles, lol.
 
BT-99 is the best starting gun for singles trap around. If you're thinking you might shoot doubles, that will be a whole different gun to start with.
You can get a new BT-99 under $1k at most stores. They are made in Japan, the company that makes them escapes me, but you can sometimes find them for a better price.
