Hello, I've just bought a cheapy 12 guage single shot, It's stamped full choke. After further examination, it looks like the muzzle was trimmed, then filed flat. I'm wondering if the "choked" section of the muzzle was removed.
So, my 2 part question is; should there be a rounded contour of the muzzle and how do I figure out if there is any choke remaining, ( I.D. of muzzle?)
thanks

Measure it...

the bore of a 12 gauge is supposed to be about .729"... if inside the muzzle measures anywhere close to that - you have no choke...

Looking through the barrel you can often see the constriction of a choke...

...pushing a tight patch through the bore you can feel the constriction of the choke...

If the barrel is less than 26 inches it probably has been cut...

"...a cheapy 12 guage single shot..." With a 30" barrel? Most of 'em come with that length. The choke is usually on the last 2" or so of the barrel. Like guntech says, if it's shorter, it has likely been cut and there is no choke.
"...a rounded contour of the muzzle..." On the end? No. It should be flat and square to the side of the barrel.

One quick way is to use a dime (0.10c) and if it
will not drop in the end it is full or mod. choke,
if it will slide in to the end of the barrel, it is cut,
or cyl . I will have to try that trick on my skeet ckoke
and see. I have a nice little choke wench by Savage
that has a gauge on it , handy as hell at the gub shows
with I do.

Thanks for the replies, the muzzle measures .712, so I guess I still have some choke left. The overall length of the barrel is 28 7/8, a dime easily passes through the muzzle, I figure there's not much choke, improved cylinder?
I'll just have to shoot it to see...

A dime goes through my (Winchoke) mod & imp/cyl but not through the full one. Might depend of the diff Brand.

any chokes can have different rates of constriction. i've seen shotguns stamped full, that were actually closer to improved modified.i.e. a rate of constriction of .035 to .040 would be full choked and .025 to .030 imp.mod.
