I'm thinking of buying my first shotgun. Don't know much about them though - I've never even fired one...

I'd like to get something that I can use for cowboy shooting eventually, so I was looking at the Norinco 12ga. Coach Gun or the Norinco 1897 Series Pump.

Would either of these make a reasonable slug gun? Conversly, would either (or both) be a bad choice for a slug gun?

Would the shorter chamber on the pump be a frustration?

Any constructive suggestions will be appreciated. I don't want to get into the whole Norinco is crap thing though.

I'm a fan of the Mossberg 590, Winchester 1300 Defender, or the Remington 870. All said and done, I would visit a local range and I'm sure some guys will let you try their shotgun. I know I would... Then see what feels most comfortable with you, the shooter :D

I would certainly recomend trying a few different model before buying. Not everybody likes shotguns (I personnaly love them) and a lot of people simply hate them. You will find that there is a great difference in recoil with a shorter barel and folding stock, especially if you dont use low recoil ammo.
