I enoy the ocasional Cowboy shoot we have here but at the last shoot I was using a pump shotgun and eversince i hav been having problems with my neck and shoulder due to all the racking I was going .(Previous problems due to a car accident)

Would I be well served by moving to a Double Barrel shotgun or the Winchester Lever shotgun? I still want to shoot but I'd like to do it with as little discomfort as possible .

Thanks

While a good Winchester 97 pump is a treat to behold, it only has a speed/time advantage over SxS's when the stage has more than 4 rounds. For the shorter stages a SxS with polished chambers has the advantage. For reactive targets that actually go down #4,5 & 6 shot have an advantage. For stationary steel, #7 1/2 & 8 shot are all you need.

shot gun recoil

i hope this helps you like it helped us...my wife and i are CAS shooters to and she has back problems, it hurts her to pull on a 12 gauge...however we got a mercury recoil cyinder from doc rowlands in NB. the web site is www.oldwestguns.ca the recoil cylinder fits into the butt of the shotgun and when you pull the triigger the mercury tries to stay forward ..thus redusing recoil...check it out...it may help you

Go ahead and try a double, many top shooters are moving to them. As long as the chambers are polished so that the fired hulls drop out there is very little difference in speed between a SxS and a 97. The advantage to a 97 comes when you have to pickup or restage your shotgun vertically. Many shoots are now trying to stage long guns on horizontal surfaces, which negates the 97 advantage. I have not had much experience with lever shotguns, though I have seen some very fast runs made with the 87s with the drop 2 mod. Hope this helps.

Howdy ; I belive a double will put less strain aon the back and shoulders.
Try a friends longer barrel say 26 inch , see how that feels or with short barrell DEAD MULE will help with recoil if you do not mind the extra weight .
DEAD MULE = remove butt plate fill screw hole with lead . big balls or slugs are tidey way to go or ? put a little wax or oil coating on the lead as it may crode a bit in years to come .
