Shotgun recommendations?

Thank you, everyone, for your comments so far.

Gibbs505 and Canvasback, thank you for re-inserting the SXS into my considerations. I came very close to purchasing an Edwardian-era Westley Richards SXS just a week or so ago. It's still in the cards if I want I suppose, but I wasn't overly keen on the idea of Damascus barrels and 2 1/2" chambers. The price was right, considering the quality and heritage, but still a little outside of my above-mentioned budget. And, although I like old school, the thought of a 100 year old gun just seemed a little too old school!

I'll keep looking out for a good deal on a SXS. Got anything in your safe you might want to sell, Canvasback? :)

Cheers,

R

I have nothing against these old damascus guns with short chambers if they are safe. Many are high quality, elegant guns. In fact, I have several. However, I would not recommend guns such as these to a new comer who has not owned double barrels before. Guns such as these are usually acquired in time when one has a better understanding of them and how/when and to what they are suited for. I think right now you would better be suited to a little more "modern" gun of which there are plenty of used quality examples out there at good prices. I also agree that at the price of a used B gun, you will find a fairly high quality SxS at the same price. As far as over/under or SxS, see what seems to suit you better. I have had several over/unders. I have only one left now, basically because they always seem awkward to me. Some of that "feeling" is likely because I have several SxS's that fit me much better and I find them more of a joy to shoot.

For your intended use, a 20 gauge would be ideal.

If your budget is around $1,000 or so, you have a ton of options for used guns in excellent condition, either S/S or O/U.

SKB 100, 200, 280, Browning/Miroku Citori & Superposed, Ugartechea, Beretta, Winchester 96/101, Franchi, etc. Check out forums dedicated to 'double guns' and read on.

Hi All,

Just thought I'd pop back in here and let you all know that I found something...

1972 Browning BSS, Miroku built, 12 bore, 2 3/4", 28" barrels, full/modified, single non-selective trigger. In very good shape, seems very lightly used, and a reasonable price. Couldn't say no!

Thanks again for all of your comments and considerations,

Cheers,

R
