What would work better on rem 870? I mainly intend to use it for deer(slugs) and turkey. I am kinda leading more towards a red dot but not sure what's out there. Keep in mind my budget is 200$.

i shot a red dot for turkeys and love it .have not had as good of luck with it for slugs .turkey hunting is always undr 25 yards and for this the red dot works wonders gets you on target very fast .when the deer barrel goes on tje gun the red dot comes off and a 1.5 to 4 scope goes on .you get much better adjustment out to 100 yards abd behond if needed with a scope .i found the red dot would not keep the slugs in a nice group forme past 50 yards .each has there place for me and each does the job i ask it to 100% .my 2 cents .DUTCH

I've tried a red dot on a number of rifles and was always unhappy. The optics are very dim and you have to adjust the brightness of the dot often. Yesterday I gave my son the dot scope and told him to look at the base of a bush about 40M away. He saw "nothing at the base of the bush and had a lot of glare." Then I gave him a 1.5-5x20 (set at 3X) and he looked again. He could easily see rocks and sticks at the base of the bushline and had a sharp image, good for early/late shooting or hunting in thick timber. 870's have a lot of recoil so I'd suggest you spend a bit more on the scope. Personally, I really like the Leupold 1-4 with the HEAVY duplex reticle. It's easy to pick it up in darker light/ thick bush AND it will survive the recoil unlike some other scopes. If you decide on another scope(unlikely) a few years down the road you can sell your Leup and get a good return on the $ as they tend to hold their value. Just my opinion but stay away from the reddots and get the scope.

What would be a good red dot site to put on a shotgun? I was thinking about putting an aimpoint micro on my 870.

An Aimpoint Micro sounds like overkill on a 870. The Vortex SPARC is getting some good reviews and only costs $239 CDN at a Canadian dealer. They are not a site sponsor but have been mentioned in various SPARC threads here on CGN. Or you could PM me if you want the dealer's name.

I agree with the previous posts: a red dot for turkey, but if you think you will be shooting out to 100 metres with slugs then I'd go with a scope.

I put a Burris Fastfire II on my mossberg 500 and love it. Superfast target aquisition and it allows me to hold my head higher off of the stock (less pressure on cheek weld) which is nice when shooting 3 inch slugs etc...
