Looking for options for a scope for a 870 slug gun, the barrel has the cantelever mount. The Bushnell banner 3x9 I had on it didn’t have enough eye relief to comfortably shoot it with sabots, took a light kiss once or twice off my eye pro when trying to sight it in a month or so back.

I’ve always liked Nikon but I’m having a hard time finding one of their Slughunter scopes in stock, is there anything else with 4-5” or more of eye relief I should take a look at? I would like something in the 3x9x40 range, preferably with a bdc style reticle.

Shooters Choice has the slughunter on their website for $285, they have their fall sale next week and it may get cheaper but you risk the chance they only have one and it being sold. Give them a call. I think Bushnell does make a banner with more eye relief for slug guns but I'd still try and find the Nikon.

Thanks guys, what other option are there? I’ve been looking around and there’s a Cabela’s brand muzzle loader scope and the Vortex crossfire ll scout scope as well. I’ll be buying a Ruger gunsite scout at some point and the vortex could go on that down the road as well, what else is there to consider? I’m not dead set on the slughunter.

What are you looking to spend? Bushnell trophy, Burris droptine and Nikon prostaff all have slug models if your looking in the 200ish market. Probably all in the 3.5-4" eye relief range. I use the prostaff 2-7x32 on my 870 and have had no issues with eye relief. I've used it for nearly 10 years and I'm sure the newer model prostaffs are better yet. Mine is an older one, still need a coin to make adjustments. Think Bushnell may have $50 mail in rebate on their trophy models now to.

I’d like to keep it in the $2-300 range, I already have rings so that’s a bonus. For reference the Bushnell banner I tried has 3.3” of eye relief, 2 3/4” sabots were just doable. 3” were what gave me the slight kiss.

A pistol scope or a scout scope will offer much more eye relief.

That’s what I was thinking, I’m down in the city for a work trip soon and I’ll have to drop into Cabela’s and Reliable and handle a couple options. I’d order online if I had already had a couple in my hands.

perhaps a "pistol" red dot or reflex sight?
Not for this one, I’d like some magnification and a bit more light gathering. I will be deer and bear hunting with this slug gun, I have a red dot on a different 12g and it’s great but not what I want for this one.
