Hi I am heading to Lebaron next week to pick up a Rem 870 combo, Synthetic 870 3" 12 gauge with 28" vent rib barrel, 23" rifled slug barrel with cantilever scope mount and a 20" turkey choke barrel with fibre optic sights, only $534.00. In any case I need a scope for the slug barrel, What would you guys recommend? Also, will I have to adjust the scope if I switch from 2 3/4" to 3" shells? Thanks guys!

I have a bunch of Leupold 1-4x scopes, mostly the older Vari-X II's, and I think they are great on large caliber rifles and shotguns. Good eye relief, appropriate power range, and extremely tough and durable. The straight-tube objective end makes them easy to mount low to the receiver, and they are very light weight, which reduces the chances of the scope slipping in the rings and also lessens the chances of damage to the mounts due to recoil. Shotguns are hard on scopes, and the Leupold is a proven product when it comes to recoil.

Leupold also makes a great scout scope if you prefer that mounting position.

John

p.s. That sounds like a good deal on a truly do-everything gun.

I use a Vortex SPARC on my 835 slug gun and am quite happy with it. Yes, I find that the difference between 2 3/4" and 3" slugs @ 50 yds to be about 6" more drop with the 2 3/4". I tried a scope and it bit me too many times with my Knoxx recoil reducing stock.

Leupold makes specific shotgun/muzzleloader scopes with a "SABR" reticle. Designed for the task with hold points for specific ranges built into the reticle. Sabot trajectory is posted on the shell box for most brands. If you shoot the same brand, ie accutip 385gr, in 2.75 and 3" you should not have to adjust as they both shoot 1900 fps mv. You will likely be most accurate using the longest shell that your barrel is chambered for. I find different brands shoot good or bad depending on the specific barrel. A 2-7 or 3-9x power scope should be plenty to let you take advantage of the sabot's ballistics. Have fun shopping for new toys. :shotgun:

I like the sparc idea as well, and put one on my savage model 24.

My first choice would be a fixed 2X but a low power variable with a bottom end of not more than 2.5 would also be a good choice. In this matter of optics, shop around and purchase the best you can afford, you might find a better used scope than what can be found in the "new" cabinet.

My preference for sights on shotguns go towards good quality red dots
like the Vortex etc. I use a Bushnell Holo Sight on my Remmy for trap
and pin shoots. As for recoil-stock set-ups, the best one out there for me is
the Mesa Tactical High Tube Recoil Stock w/Enidine buffer.
The straight line stock puts your eye to the scope without neck stretchin'
and the Enidine Shock tames the recoil down to 20 ga. level, plus the long
top rail allows optics mounting out beyond the "Bite Zone".
Only thing is though, this set-up don't come cheap. The Mesa assembly
w/buffer and rail will run ya 400.oo before tax & shipping.
