Hello everyone, this is my first post, but ive been reading for a long time!!

I'm would like to reduce the barrel length of a 12g from 30" to 20". Is this legal for me to do myself, considering ive got the proper tools and knowledge? Or do I have to take it into a gunsmith?

thanks

My understanding, it is no longer legal to make such changes but I mayh be mistaken. I suggest that you ask CFC first.

The Canadian firearms book states that in Canada a barrel may be as short as 18.5" but the firearm must not be shorter than 26". You can cut your own barrel but you will be left with a cylindersize choke. If the cut is not exact the shot will always be off to one side.

For the little it costs, I would send the barrel to a gunsmith to cut and crown the barrel and remount the bead.

i took my wifes down to 20" from 30 " and then took it to the smith who re crowned and re-installed the bead cost me a total of $25 plus a treat for his puppy
