Okay,

I tried to start this dicussion in the shotgun section but nobody seems to want to discuss it there so I'm going to try it here.

I have this idea. Is it possible to have a sabot slug which is enclosed by a case which has rifling similar to a foster slug? My theory is that when fired through a smooth bore, the foster style case would provide enough rotation to shed the case upon exiting the barrel and provide enough spin to stabilize the projectile. This would allow you to fire sabots out of a smooth bore gun.

I realize that it would not be as accurate as a rifle barrel but what do you think?

One comment made was that fosters don't start to spin until they have left the barrel. Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks.

It's FORSTER SLUG.

The Forster slug has the rifling cast into the sides and the air, after it's left the barrel, is supposed to cause the slug to spin.

As for thother question, pretty near anything travelling down something smoot will go in a straight line as there is nothing to grab onto to inpart a turn.

A sabot, rifled or not, comes off when the projectile exits the barrel. I suppose it's possible to make a rifled slug that goes into a sabot and starts to spin after the sabot drops off. Mind you, if that did work, I suspect one of the ammo makers would already have done it. Seems to me that sabot slugs are made for rifled barrels though. I'm guessing though. RePete?

That's about the size of it.
