Shotguns for 'yotes

Hello folks,

Following on from the "Let's see your yote rifle" thread, how about a predator shotgun thread? Anyone use a shotgun when hunting foxes and yotes?

Interested in how people set theirs up.
What will probably be my go to is a Benelli Supernova 12b, 24" smooth bore barrel with rifle sights and a Burris Speedbead and Fastfire III (3MOA Dot). Also has a Nordic Extension Tube which is mainly from shooting Practical Shotgun as well.

I'll follow up with specs to mine. Rem 870, had a bushnell 1-4 cheapo scope on it and was using hornady varmint Express #4 buck. Was using an extended Turkey choke as well.

Unfortunately I need some form of optic on mine as neither of my 870's would shoot to poa with buck. I guess the mass of the pellets retain more velocity and shoot higher?

I did run a cz combo gun for a while but it didn't like high brass. It also seemed to have problems keeping rifle and shotgun on same poa.

Biggest thrill was calling one in to about 5 yards. He was really surprised.
 
Mossberg 535 ats in ati m4 stock and anti jam foreend and 4x32 Redfield. I generally use a .650 turkey choke as its my turkey gun. Swap chokes to a full and load it with #4 buck and it slays song dogs.
Next i use an asena semi auto and after that i resort to various sxs 12ga guns
 
Here's my idea of the perfect gun for calling coyotes in the bush. Heym BBF 16 ga. ( Xtra full choke) over .222 Rem. topped off with a 2-4 x scope in QD claw mounts. Under 6 lbs. and accurate! With 1-1/4 oz of BB's or 40 gr. Vmax, depending on the opportunity and range it is very effective. It doesn't get enough time in the field! I need to get out more.

I’m with you Longwalker. Mine is a Blaser though. 16ga full over a 5.6x50R which seems to work. I handload 4buck for close up encounters.
 
I'm running a canuck marauder 12g with Carlson coyote choke. #4 buck will still place 9-10 pellets into a milk jug at 70 yards. Just using the fiber optic front sight and factory rear peep
 
Awesome, at what distances are you guys shooting coyotes at with 12g shotguns and what kind of patterns are you getting with #4 buckshot? I’d love to use my 12g for more thing hunting related, have a bunch of different barrels to choose from, I love hunting with a shotgun.
 
My old mav 88 with 28" barrel and Carlson coyote choke will reliably kill dogs out past 50 yds. That's using the cheap snap on the rib fiber optic sights I bought at a garage sale...not sure the make.
This year I switched to a marauder with 22" barrel. ( I found the 28" long for bush calling). So far 60 yards is the farthest I've killed a coyote but have tested it out to 80 yds on a milk jug. At 80 yards for the three test shots I took I was averaging 3 pellets in the jug. At 70 I averaged 9. Sights are set so if I put the front bead on the top of the jug at 70 I get the 8-10 pellets into the jug. At 10 yards I place the bead just under and shred the jug with the full payload. I use the Carlson choke and cheap federal 2 3/4" blue box #4 buckshot. Up to about 50-60 yards it just flattens dogs. Past that it will still kill but they often spin and flip as I feel penetration is not quite as good coupled with less of the payload hitting the vitals
 
Very interested in this post. My wife and I bought property this winter where I understand the coyote population is thriving. I'll be putting the hurt on this summer, figured a 5.56 would do the job, but I recently saw the Carlson's choke and decided it would make a good addition to the short barrel 870.

I love calling the big open fields with my 22-250. But there's something about Woodlot calling with the shotty. When hunting bush I tend to either stand with my back to a tree.or sit on a tall stool. Wind is most critical. Often I try to draw them to the edge of cut lines for the shot. Exact same call technique but often when you get a response you will need to close the gap on them quickly or they will circle into your wind and you will never even see them. By closing the gap I feel they are more prone to just come in for a peek.
