Hello, I just acquired a large amount of mixed 12ga. shotshells in a deal and about 400 of them are loose in a big box, all are factory loads but most of the labeling has worn off the shells. now for the stupid question: how the hell do I tell the steel shot from the lead? all shells with plastic tubes, some are smooth plastic and feel waxy and others are hard + corrugated. Alot of them are winchester double x magnum #4. also am having the same problem with bunch of mixed 20ga. so is there a way to tell the steel from the lead, by the casings used etc... or am I screwed?

Figured it out. I got them mostly sorted, just finished actually. 700 shells in all.
its 5am now. all the ones clearly marked as steel were separated and all the rest I am going to assume they are lead and use them for trap. no sense in taking a chance come hunting season on accidentally using lead. don't know what I'm gonna do with the 70 rifled slugs I found though... well there is a plywood target at the range that is gonna hate me tomorrow i guess.

I wouldn't worry about the target hating you kukishin, it will get over it when nit goes into the burn barrel. :D

But, I would like to know how you figured it out.

Cheers

The magnet is the way the Wildlife officer is going to check your loads. He can't disassemble a load in the field to make an arrest or give a ticket. He would just put a magnet to the shells that weren't clearly marked.

Thanks, I will double check them with a magnet. to answer you question exmeathead, I just separated the ones that were marked and all the rest are going to be range shells by default.
